Waiting for LMO and passed 30 days Work Visa renewal

I am here on a work visa and have been here since 2009.
The company I work for took too long to submit the LMO request and the 30 days deadline to submit my visa renewal has now passed.

Whilst I understand that once I have received my LMO I will now have to submit a reinstatement request for the visa within 90 days, do I need to apply for a visitor visa in the meantime? I am from the UK.

I also find it ridiculous that if I was applying from scratch it would be 6 weeks but a reinstatement can take months! Why can't I just apply again?!?! Why does it take so long to renew or reinstate when they already know who you are and have already checked you out?!
