Hello.  I'm an American and my boyfriend lives in Nova Scotia. We've talked about who would move where when were ready for that, and have agreed that I would go to Nova Scotia. I've looked into getting a skilled workers visa, but i don't seem to be qualified for what Nova Scotia is looking for (as I've always been in the administration field).

My question is if I can visit Canada for 3 or 6 months to visit with him (meanwhile I plan on renting my own room as he still lives at home)? Am I able to rent a room? Can I look for work while there, and is it realistic to expect that someone would want to hire me, being an american with no work visa?

I'm sure I'm leaving something out.

Tl;DR: I want to visit Canada for an extended period of time to see if I like the area in which my boyfriend lives in before we decide if we want to move me there permanently.

Thank you.

To work in Canada you have to have work permit.
You also need to buy visitors to Canada medical insurance (please take a look at my signature).
You are able to rent a room or apartment. It is up to landlord.
You are not allowed to smoke in Canada.
