visiting canada while PR application being processed

we submitted our application last week and plan to visit my husband's family in canada a couple of weeks (drive there) as well as throughout the summer.  do we need to tell the border about our application? what do others do when traveling in/out of canada while the application is being processed?

It's always best to be honest, but you don't need to tell them everything at once. It's ok to be vague.

My husband hasn't had trouble since we paid the application fee, so if you have a copy of your receipt, that would help if there was any hassle. You can say - we're not trying to do anything illegal, we're in the process of sponsorship, and just want to visit each other for X amount of time.

My husband has never had trouble visiting me (not since we paid the application fees, and he carries a copy of the receipt with him as proof for when he travels).

The point is that the foreign national must be able to demonstrate that they actually intend to return home within a reasonable period of time.  They will suspect that someone who has applied for permanent status might be intending to come and stay - even if their PR ap is refused - so they guard against that until a decision is made by requiring proof of intent to return.  Usually a return trip itinerary is enough - but once the PR ap is submitted, it's better to be able to show that there's a job at home to return to, and obligations such as a lease/rental agreement for housing, etc.  Otherwise they could refuse entry until such time as the FN has been approved to "land".
