I have heard that the border guards are usually co-operative about allowing your spouse (spousal sponsorship) to come across the border to stay with you once the PR application is received and in process.  PR application is outland.  I understand that I should accompany my spouse across the border when we try this.  Do any of you have experience or advice regarding this?

As per my knowledge, if your passport is  from a visa exempted country, then the border guards may not stop you. Otherwise, you may need a visitor visa to enter Canada along with your sponsor.

i'm from the U.S and i am in Canada right now while my application is in process. coming over this time was the easiest since i started seeing my husband, i was asked why i was applying for 180 days i said "to be with my husband while my app was in process and hopefully it wouldn't take nearly that long", the guy laughed and asked why i didn't apply in land, we had a little chat about the immigration process person to person not applicant to immigration officer, he asked if my meds were done told me good luck& congratulations and stamped my passport
no return ticket
no letter of invite
husband wasn't with me
it was the first time i came across with no documents to assure them i wasn't trying to stay illegally, i think they see once you reach that point that you are trying to do things the way you are supposed to and really have no reason to overstay
i have never applied for a visa extension so i dont know if that will effect things
but i doubt it

Based on my own experience, visa officers and border guards are cooperative if you are honest with them.

My Russian wife ( married only two months ago ), is in the USA on a student visa.  We haven't yet submitted her perm. residence application.  We are still waiting for her Russian police report.  She just got back from Washington having successfuly got a visa to visit me during her spring break next week.  All she needed to do was show that she planned to return to finish her studies, and that she had enough money.  They have limited her visa to April 4th.  I suspect that they are waiting to see whether or not I will be approved as a sponsor before they are prepared to give her a longer visa.  She will consequently need to reapply in July for her next visit.  Again we will be honest, "Visa officer, my wife has the option to remain in the USA to complete her optional practical training ( one year of employment relevant to her studies) , but we would prefer to be together."  That's our plan.  Be honest.  Show that you understand the rules ( I specified this understanding in my letter of invitation ).  Show that you want to follow the rules.
