My application for permanent residence under inland spousal sponsorship was received by CIC on September 15, 2010.
My work permit (Temporary working visa) will expire on June 30, 2011.
I want to apply for extension as visitor as I am not sure when the result will come.
My problem is that i renewed my passport on March 21, 2011 and they told to get it on May 24, 2010. Then I got a call from a friend that the process to renew passport now takes 3 months. (so if that's the case, i might get my passport renewed on june 21, 2011)
If that is true, I won't be able to apply my extension at least 30 days before my status expires.
My question: Is it okay to send my application for extension 1 week before my status expires? All requirement is ready now except for my new passport.
Any advise is highly appreciated.
Thank you very much!

Yes, it's fine.
What makes you so sure as the CIC documentation suggests at least a month is required? Reason I ask is that I'm about to apply for an extension too.

Section 183(5) of IRPR makes me sure: Extension of period authorized for stay (5) If a temporary resident has applied for an extension of the period authorized for their stay and a decision is not made on the application by the end of the period authorized for their stay, the period is extended until (a) the day on which a decision is made, if the application is refused; or (b) the end of the new period authorized for their stay, if the application is allowed. There is no time limit given in the Regulations, just that the extension has been applied for before the end of the current status. This being the law, I'm sure. Aside from that, I do this for a living.

Thanks, very useful to see the legislation. Am I a "temporary resident" if I have just entered with a visitor permit (i.e. passport stamped on entry, from visa-exempt country)? I wonder why they suggest a month when they really only mean before expiry.

Probably to prevent procrastination and to allow time for safe delivery of the application to Vegreville (if done by paper) or if there is a malfunction of the online system. Better to be safe than sorry!

Cheers, I'll try not to procrastinate (any more than I usually do) ...and to answer my own question, a visitor under the guise I alluded to above is a temporary resident, according to cic.gc.ca

i will send extension of stay as visitor this week because my temporary work permit will expire soon.. I presume you know you won't be allowed to work on a visitor permit. Please help me for the additional documents that to be sent. Proof of funds is important - I sent a copy of my most recent bank statementIs it necessary to send supporting letter from my husband stating that we have inland sponsorhip in process? I sent them the sponsor approval letter from Mrs.Saga and my $1040 fees receipt for the PR application to prove I had an application in process. I don't think a letter from your hubbie would hurt but I suspect it won't be necessary if you provide the abovewhat im gonna write in sECTION D - MY REQUEST I WANT TO EXTEND MY STAY IN CANADA UNTIL ? ________ I put 6 months from when my visitor permit expired. I have heard that others who did the same were granted a year. I don't think it will have a negative impact if you ask for a year. In your case as you're going for inland they will hopefully give you a year.what other documents need to send? Any criminality docs: I sent my police certificate and lawyers letters explaining my past and how well behaved I am these daysWhat is the right complete address to send my extension of stay as visitor because I see different address in the package and in the bottom part of document list. Thanks guys for all your help.. There is a checklist in the package: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/visitor.asp and further information here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/extend-stay.asp. You send your package to the address on this page http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/5551E6.asp (Vegreville, AB)Application sent: September 12, 2010 Application Received: September 15, 2010 Application was processed on : November 3, 2010 Temporary Work permit will expire on June 30, 2010 _________ Good luck

No you don't need to include a photo of yourself for a visitor permit extension, as far as I am aware.
