Visa about to expire, work permit until 03/2010

Hi all,

I have a few questions.  My Canadian Temporary work visa will expire in a couple of months but my work permit is valid until 03/2010.  I can stay in Canada until 03/2010 even with a expired visa, right?  As I understand it, a valid visa is just required for entry into Canada, the legal status within the country is determined by a valid work permit.  Also, can I apply for a visa while still living in Canada, by sending the passport and Temporary visa application to a Canadian consulate in US?  Thanks in advance.
