I learned that ALL of the documents in a foreign language need to be translated into English. Does this also apply to financial things such as deposit slips and bank passbooks?

Normally, yes.  But approach it from a legal standpoint.  What is the purpose of submitting the passbook? - to verify that two people are on an account, or that you have a certain amount of funds?  In that case, perhaps it's enough just to have the accountholders' names translated, as everything else is in numbers and is self-explanatory.  The same might be said for a deposit slip.

Use your best judgement.
