Hi friends,

this is a really premature question but one I'm curious about.

I only became a PR in April this year so it's a while before I contemplate citizenship BUT I saw that with Bil C-6 there's a change coming where they will count time spent before you were a PR.

I lived in Canada from January 2011 until October 2013 and spent a total of about 2 months (holidays) outside of the country in that period. I was on three successive working holiday visas (first through BUNAC before it expired and then 2 on the IEC visa). I also spent 2 months on a visitor visa in the middle of a visa change over. So I spent a total of 32 months in that time frame living as a temporary resident.

When the changes come into force will I be able to count this time as a temporary resident of Canada towards my Citizenship application?

Only curious because it doesn't stipulate whether this has to be within a certain time frame at present. I personally think that it would have to be within the last 5 years in which case I wouldn't be able to, but wondering what people think/know.

Thanks!

You won't be able to use this time unfortunately. It needs to fall within the five years previous to the application submission.

That's what I figured. It's just confusing wording because it says here that the 3 out of 5 means you need to be physically present in Canada for this time before applying and that "Applicants may count each day they were physically present in Canada as a temporary resident or protected person before becoming a permanent resident as a half-day toward meeting the physical presence requirement for citizenship, up to a maximum credit of 365 days."

I guess the second statement is a larger picture of the first one about 3 out of 5 years. If out of those 5 years, two of those years were as a temporary resident, then one can be used as credit towards the 3 years.

Just odd wording I guess. We'll know more when it comes into force. This calculator on this site (https://www.canadavisa.com/canadian-citizenship-eligibility-calculator.html) should probably be updated to show time before as not being eligible because it says I can do it in 2019 but I'm pretty sure I can only do it in 2020.

No rush. Just curiosity really!
