Hi,

My wife and I have just got the PR and are looking for a suitable job before coming to Canada. We both are delhites, I am working as an AM with Metlife (I have 9+ years of experience in the BPO domain wherein apart from customer service, I have experience into Telecom Billing with BT, and Insurance with Metlife), and my wife is working as a Manager with EmaarMgf into the Customer Relations and Sales domain (she has worked earlier with Chubb Security Sydney as a Senior Escalation Specialist and has also worked as an MIS specialist Team Lead with Cresanda Solutions which is an IT company, along with Standard Chartered as a MIS executive). She also has 8+ years of experience.
I have done my MBA in management from Sydney and she is a Post Grad Diploma holder in HR. I have worked for 3 years in Sydney and my wife has worked for 1 year in Sydney (both os us were working as Senior Escalation Speialists with Chubb Security)
Kindly suggest what route should we take to land up a job so that we can travel. Would look forward to your answers.

Regards
Sanjeev

You've used suitable job and Canada in once sentence as you know from this forum, getting a suitable job in Canada is like landing on the moon. You can try various links such as monster.ca or workpolis but the chances are pretty slim. You'll have to come here and look for a job might have to re certify your degrees, spend money and obtain Canadian certifications . There is a good possibility you may not be doing the same job you initially got immigration for ( including all the experience you have), you might have to end up doing survival jobs, like security guard/ restaurant/waiter/ taxi driver etc. Dont worry there are many of us here with high qualifications but cant find jobs. So prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Please stay in touch as your feedback is really important to us and the future of many immigrants such as yourself

In my opinion that is why they have abolished the Federal Skilled Visa Category 3 because too many P.R are finding it difficult to land a job.

Now the only means of getting P.R for the FSW visa is...

1. You have Canadian experience in a skilled job
2. Sponsored by a company for a skilled job
3. Your job is in the 29 Noc List (high demand)

Makes alot of sense if you think about it.

But like the other person suggested, 'Prepare for the worst but hope for the best. Keep in contact on your progress and inform us all'

I'm very interested to know your outcome and progress since I have also got tertiary qualifications from Australia (Accounting/H.R/Psycholgy), although I have not yet landed in Canada.

Please don't be discouraged Sumar27. There are some people on this forum that got jobs within weeks even days of landing in Canada without the almighty Canadian experience. Stay positive do your due diligence in terms of adjusting your resume to Canadian format, network and you might be one of the lucky ones.

Good Luck!

Submit your educational credentials for review before leaving for Canada. It will take a while to get the results and it will be easier for you to gather the required documents now. Be prepared to hear that you will require retraining in Canada. Foreign credential recognition continues to be a major hurdle for highly qualified immigrants trying to work in their field. There are many credential services (and various costs involved) so start with your relevant licensing/regulatory associations for initial information. Also consider using a university or www.wes.org.

Hi,

Thanks for the inputs. I am aware of the fact that getting a suitable job isn't easy, I had a similar issue when I was doing my MBA in Australia, however as rightly said I was able to land up a job with a customer care division withing 2 months. However as Canada is different in terms of job oppurtunities, thats why I was asking as to what's the best way to find a job. I have already posted my CV on monster. Could you please advise where shall i get my credentials verified from? Secondly are there any suitable job consultanties which can be approached?

Not sure what else to ask, do let me know if you all have any other inputs to share.

Thanks
Regards
Sanjeev

not quite sure what added value a review of academic credentials for an MBA will provide. It's not a regulated profession and fort his reaons per se accepted in canada.

The thing is that an MBA from sydney is as good as one from delhi, cologne or miami. Employers preferably hire candidates from local unis or at least from canadian unis. The reason is simply because they know the quality of these institutions. Foreigners mostly will be evaluated based on their work experience (special skills) and former employer (you're better of if your employer is known and does business in canada). As an BPO person you'll probably find it tough to find a job in your profession as most BPO jobs being offshored to - guess what - india. Those client facing managing jobs are quite rare and mostly filled by locals. Similar the situation in sales, as your main asset as a sales person is your rolodex (contacts) which is obviously not transferrable to canada.

Therefore, be prepared to be unemployed for a longer period (6 -12 months) and/or to get an entry level job. in the worst case you end up with a survival job...

good luck!

I would partially agree with clubcanada. I do think immigrants coming from commonwealth countries and the US in most situations have an easier time with educational equivalency. Of course there are world reknowned schools that hold the same, if not hirer value then many local schools eg) London School of Economics, or Yale, Brown, Harvard etc. Like in any country, Canada has top tier schools that will hold much more weight when someone reviews your educational background then other schools. If you live and want to work in Ontario and attended schools like Queens, Waterloo, or Toronto as examples these would hold more value then some other schools that have lower entrance requirements and overall reputation.

I personally don't think you'll have too much trouble with an education from US, yes, there will be some exceptions, but overall it should be easier.

Those of u with Aussie MBAs or any MBA from any other country, i can tell u, its purely useless though the employers may recognize yr education as university education or post secondary education, but they are not considered as equal in Canada, unless yr MBA is from an Ivy League from USA. I have an bachelors degree from US, a top business school, where employers here do recognize well but my MBA from Australia and my Masters in Finance from a top Hong Kong university, which both the Masters are AACSB accreditated, are not considered in my employment when i was hired here by a Canadian Bank and mind those of u who think they will land in top jobs or jobs that they had in middle management or a profession before they came to Canada, i can tell u, that dont be surprised that u land up in junior starting position.

My background was with top named Banks from US, Japan, Australia, Singapore and Taiwan but the experiences are not relevant when i applied for jobs here in the financial institutions at all! So imagine for those of u, qualifications and work experiences from less developed countries, would u think they will matter at all, when my previous experiences from developed countries are irrelevant here and not even considered at all and I had to start from a junior position!

So to put things in perspective, better get yr Uni or post secondary education in Canada if u want to work in Canada, be it bachelors degree or Diploma or Masters. Even a Diploma from Canada is more valuable than a Masters or PHD from India or China or any developing country. So those with such post graduate education, u can just forget about yr post secondary education qualifications when u are looking for jobs in Canada and take into consideration those education u have in Canada! Like wise for yr work experiences!

@Cdn28:
I think it's not about educational equivalency and I doubt that an education from a commonwealth country will provide you any advantage as we're talking about an MBA. These days most business schools have some kind of accreditation and most evaluation criteria are quite similar. In other words - from an educational standpoint the education is quite similar. Therfore, at the end of the day it's about the uni's reputation and popularity from a canadian view. If you graduated from a top school you will have better chances in regards to acceptance than if you would have graduated from a small private school. In the latter case you might have better chances if your MBA is coming from a developed country. However, as I stated before, in cases where you attended a foreign business school you probably will be judged more on your work experience which brings you back to your former employer's reputation AND specifc skill set. I would not generalize my own case but I got my job because of my work experience from western europe and due to my former company's reputation and market presence in canada as well. That I got an MBA from the US was pretty much secondary and it wouldn't have been different if I had graduated from germany, spain, holland or italy...

@abelkwh:
I wouldnt say that your work experience is irrelevant. It's more about how much of it would be adoptable to the canadian market. I dont know nothing about your specific situation. But I've seen quite a lot people with a business degree whose work experience was not transferrable to the canadian market. For example international marketing: A country like canada that mainly does business with the US (about 80%) does not provide much potential for people in international marketing...

GTA = Greater Toronto Area (includes toronto, markham, richmond hill, missisuaga brampton etc) like NCR in delhi.

u can check jobs at jobbank.gc.ca, eluta.ca, careerbuilder.ca, kellyservices.com, roberthalf.ca, Randstad, net-temps

initially it is very tough to get a job in GTA. They(employers) want u to have canadian experience. for that u can work as a volunteer with firms like simpressions, simplicious, WES, jobskills to get canadian work experience.

check settlement.org for detailed information about everything as a newcomer. (job, work experience, credit cards, housing etc.)

BEST OF LUCK

The TRUTH is qualifications/degrees/years of experience is only to obtain PR and to keep the VO doing his job...... Once you are in Canada its a different story.
Depends how far you go to make the story ending good.

Bottom line THE ONLY WAY IS WORK YOURSELF UP!!!!!!
