Hi!

I am about to declare my father's car (which is in the US) in the goods to follow form upon my first landing in Canada as a PR. I am not sure if it will work and exempt me from paying any taxes while I'll be importing that car from the US? I haven't owned, possessed and used the car before the arrival to Canada, I am just intending to receive the car as a gift and import then. Please clarify.

If you include it on your goods-to-follow form, it's exempt from taxes. However, at the time of importing, you must prove that you're the rightful owner of the car - the title should have your name on it, not your father's, otherwise, you'll have a tough time at Customs. After your done importing, then you have to think about making changes on the car as required by Canadian law for you to register it e.g. speedometer in km/hr as opposed to m/hr, day lights etc.
