Would they accept that? Is it not required to bring these amounts with the applicant to Canada?
No this is not required. You just need to be able to prove that you have the funds

Open another account in Tangerine as well. It is free, no minimum balance, free one time check book and you may use Scotia Bank ABM machines for free to withdraw cash.

Thanks for the info. its very helpful.
Just to summarize:
1. If we have facility to wire transfer, its best to have funds in our accounts in home country itself.
2. Money in home country account can be used as proof of income during landing in Canada
3. It's easy to open bank account in Canada.

a question:
Can someone please tell which would be best bank to open account in Vancouver area?

Guys, what do you think of the "TD Cash Back Visa Card"? Looks interesting as a credit card option to me.

can someone who recently migrated to Canada give an insight about their experiences in opening bank account in Canada?
It is very easy. Once you land, apply for sin number. For initial bank usage, open an account in one of the known banks like TD bank or RBC. I have my account at TD. Usually, they give you offers for a new account but don't hesitate to ask for offers if there are any. You need to then give your sin number and passport. That's it.
