I too have had negative experiences with Canadian IOs. Whether they are 'nice' is largely irrelevant if they do not know the legislation they are enforcing. In two cases with me, they have been 'nice' but have misunderstood immigration law.
I had this problem, and therefore ended up in tears because of the very first Canadian I had ever met, the first time I'd ever entered the country. He told me there was no such thing as outland common law sponsorship. And said I was just sit on my ass and live off my boyfriend. He told me sponsorship applications take well over a year, and that I would get deported after my 6months was up (I was requested an extension as soon as I arrived due to my application, as I'd heard some people had be granted it) He was horrid, and had me thinking I was totally wrong about my whole application. I remember his face though, how could I forget that after I'd waited in a queue for 2hours after a flight from the UK. Maybe I will wave my COPR in his pudgey little face when I re-land next month

Sounds like a horrible experience. A great first impression of Canadians. It sounds like you got an idiot on a power trip. You should definately wave it in his face. Silly man!

Our application arrived the Mississauga office on June 2nd. According to the processing time on the website it takes 40 days. We should have heard something on the 12th (yesterday). Still haven't heard anything today. Is this usual? Should we be worried?

I don't think it is anything to worry about. I think the 40 days is an estimate.... They just updated the processing times today; they are working on applications received on June 2nd... hopefully we should hear soon! I'm also June 2nd and no news either...

I guess I must have got used to them.. pinklady - You just reminded me of how much nicer UK Immigration officers are by comparison! I think a lot of it depends on your attitude. I'm extremely friendly and warm as a person. My wife's family tend to get quite tense and nervous and that usually sends off bad vibes. I'm myself, relaxed, I don't rehearse what I'm going to say. Even though I'm covered in tattoos I've had good luck I guess ) I have heard MANY horror stories of Canadians given a really hard time by Canadian border guards though!! Go figure!

One time I was travelling via Calgary enroute to Vancouver... was a terribly long journey and my bags got lost. When going through immigration I was asked my reason for visiting. I said I was visiting my boyfriend and his family. He then asked - is your boyfriend expecting you? I said yes... he then asked "are you planning on staying in Canada for good?". I said "no, just a vacation" (it was at the time)... he then said... "why not? It's a beautiful country!!!"

The IO was an older gentlemen and asked if my parents knew I was in Canada. He was joking of course, I look abit younger than my actual age Another time we were driving back into Canada after a holiday to the US, the IO asked us if were were bringing anything back. We said "diet cherry coke" she said "It's good eh?" and waved us through. These were my only good experiences.

So far, fingers crossed I have only had good experiences with IOs at the Canadian border. One time I was just flagpolling to America to activate a 12 month work permit and the IO issuing the permit gave me an extra 6 weeks after the work permit expired to stay in the country for holiday time. I didn't even request this so I thought it was very nice of her.

i have had mainly good experiances coming through vancouver airport but i flagpoled at the border last october and the canadian IO was terrifying! Asked me a ton of questions about why I was getting my work permit at that border and why hadn't i done it in vancouver and glared at me the whole time! i seriously thought he'd deny me and get me stuck in no-mans land! lol the vancouver airport guys have always been lovely though
