Hi

I read that once you recieve your immigration visa you do not become a permanent resident until you cross the border into canada. What happens if you are already in Canada on a visitors visa? I am living with my Husband in Vancouver. Does that mean that when i get approval and my passport back i have to leave canada then come back in?

The process is "landing",  you can do it at a border or at an inland office (you need to book an appointment).

I am a Canadian/British citizen living in th UK with my common law partner - he's Irish. We're sending our application next month, I'm sponsoring him. How long after sponsorship / his perm residency is approved do we have to land in Canada to live? We thought we were preparing things very early because we thought it would take nearly a year but from what I've read here the UK office seems to be fast! Do they give a short timeframe to move over?

How exciting to be at the start of the process!! London do seem to be processing faster than the guidelines say. The visa expires 12 months after the date of the medical.
Good luck, hope everything goes smoothly for you

is that correct?
you can go to canada as a tourist when the PR process is ongoing. when your passport is requested in london by CIC there, you can fedex it to them and wait in canada for CIC to send it back to you in canada?

Hi there,

I received my passport some days ago from London and my visa was issued on the 14th of March  2011 and it will expire on the 4th of August 2011. So this is the last when I have to land in Canada.(I don`t know if it`s related but my medical report has the same expiration day). It`s valid for 1 year. My medical check was done on the 4th of august 2010. So I guess the expiration date of the visa and validity of the medical report is related. You can see our timeline here. It was pretty fast.
The other thing what you can do when you have your visa you land in Canada you stay here and sort out all the papers what you need for your pr (I am not sure about health care), but SIN and bank account.
Then you can leave the country if you receive the pr card (6-8 weeks to get it I think but it depends) . Then you can leave Canada and I think from your date of landing I am not sure but I think you have 1 year or 2 ? Huh I am not sure while you have to settle here. I am not sure it`s good to get the citizenship faster or just to  get your pr renewed automatically after it expires (5 year). I am not sure about the last 2 things. I would search or ask some experts here:)
Good luck for your application.

If i didn't have so many pets I would be in Canada awaiting my PPR, probably not even caring about when I get it (obviously within the 6 months visit visa of course) I would certainly not be checking my emails and my ecas and this website constantly everyday thats for sure lol! I planned to take the whole summer off anyway and find work in the fall. But I don't want to risk paying loads for pet cargo for them to question why am I bringing them with me before my PPR and be refused entry or something. Oh well more time to make money at my job so I can afford this summer off that I want!

Hello!

Congrats Juljud!!! Thats so great!

What comes to pr and landing. You have to land before medicals or passport expires, which ever is earlier.you get pr card 6-8 weeks after landing. You have to give address where pr card is gonna be send when you are landing. If you have relatives here, it can be sent to their address. This way you can leave the country after landing. Your relatives can post it to you later then. That's what i have heard people doing.
Health coverage depends which province you are gonna live. In Ontario it's 3months after landing you health coverage kicks in!

when you are pr, you have to live in the country 2year in 5 year period (cic.gc.ca gives it in days as well!). If pr is married to canadian citizen and they live aboard, this rule doen't touch them, as long as pr holder can prove being/living together with citizen.
Citizenship can be applied after 3years of living inside the country in 4 year period (this also in days cic.gc.ca). Althoug, earliest you can apply is 2 years from getting permanent residence status. When you are visitor here, every day is count as a half day residing in Canada.

I hope this helps, please correct me if i am wrong!

THUMBS UP!!!! we want PPRs and also some of us want passports back!! Cheesy  Tongue

Thanks so much for the reply. Medical was last Thursday so guess we'll be over within the year if not sooner!

Yes i have been in Canada while the whole process has been going on. You get 6 months but i have just extended my visitors visa no problem. As long as you are in the process and you can prove funds then it seems they will continue to extend your visitor visa until the process is complete. You just can't work Sad
