I've noticed a few applicants have had the RCMP request a backround check and fingerprints. I'm assuming it's because they are already living in Canada, or they have lived in Canada in the past. I lived and worked in Ontario for a year in 1991. Is there a chance the RCMP would request a background check if it was 20 years ago? If so, would it be a long process? Just trying to anticipate any possible hurdles in the progress of my application.

I assume that my husband had to get one because he has a very common name.  He has never actually lived in Canada so I found it odd that they wanted to do one.  But when Buffalo asks you to do something, you do it!  We applied outland so in order for his to be processed faster, he drove up to Windsor (on his birthday!) to get the prints taken electronically.  It was a hassle and it seemed quite arbitrary but that's how it goes.

FYI, for those of you waiting for your AOR, as of last week, the Buffalo Visa Office is working on applications forwarded on January 24, 2011. Our application for Permanent Residence was received by the visa office on March 17th –when they get around will they contact the sponsor or the person being sponsored?

I guess I don't officially have the AOR then. Just the E-cas confirmation that Buffalo received my application. Hopefully the AOR with my file # is in the mail!  Roll Eyes

Puzzle69, hope you're well. I'm so confused about the new system and obtaining an AOR. Did you get a letter with a file number yet? Thanks.

Love-Buf-Wings,  I have not received a letter or file number yet. Just the E-cas confirmation that Buffalo got my application. I thought that was the AOR. I'm a bit confused, too, but waiting patiently to hear or receive something.

Same for me, just an ecas update. The last we knew, Buffalo was processing files rcvd by Jan 27. I know its not true but hope the date refers to the date files rcvd initially by Mississauga. Roll Eyes

Don't you love it when someone's misinformation ends up screwing you over? After seeing that the majority of applicants on this board had their medicals done prior to sending their applications, I contacted the DMP in my area again. I was originally told that I had to wait for Canadian Immigration to "officially request" my meds (via mail) before I could have them done. I just called them again and they told me that was wrong. The receptionist misinformed me. All I had to do was bring the filled out Appendix C form with my passport and $ and I could get it done. I could've sent my meds with my application in February!!  Angry

At any rate, I'm getting my medical done this Tuesday. Does anyone know what I would need to do after I'm finished? I hate that I now have to send this separately from my application. I don't want it to get lost in the process. Does the DMP send up the results? Can I give the Buffalo office a heads up to look out for it? I'm concerned this is going to cause a huge delay in my processing. Any advice is much appreciated.....

so I tried using the automated number to see if there are any updates to my file. It said: -

file was received on Feb 3rd....ok good.
The file was transfered to the nearest Visa office on March 25th ..ok good.
But then it says...Information requested from you was received on april 19th 2011. i dont get it what information they are talking about? My wife was told to fax some document but that was done before March 25th 2011.

I was wondering the same thing, so I emailed the visa office and that's when they told me that they are working on Permanent Residence applications forwarded by Mississauga in quo. Hopefully, they are working on the February files, given their pace -it will take over a month for them to contact us.

I posted a thread about this earlier, and no one seemed to have any advice, so I'll ask you guys.  Smiley

I'm hoping to land next week.  I'm currently in Canada with my husband.  After iamrobot's experience, I'm not even considering driving my car over the border to the states to try to land.  My husband can't cross into the states with me, so he'll be waiting on the Canadian side of the border.

My question is, what's the best way to do this?  Can I drive his car?  Or would it be better to rent one?

...it may be worth taking the bus.

My husband recently drove my car across the boarder (to find a lawyer for his custody case) and he was stuck at the boarder for 5 hours.  Apparently, you aren't suppose to drive a Canadian registered car across the boarder, without the owner...or presummably a Canadian.

When he was waiting at the boarder, he inquired if he couldn't drive across, could he go to the Canadian side, park the car, and get a rental and drive across.  Again the answer was NO.

Eventually after much verifying, and checking he was permitted to drive my car across the boarder but there was several hours delay time.

If you husband can't cross, perhaps he knows another fellow Canadian that can drive across the boarder with you.  Always better to err on the side of caution.

Good luck!

I'm with Cindy1 - stay away from rental cards. Go with the bus and save yourself the stress!

My husband crossed by megabus (both to go down to the Buffalo consulate to get the visa and then back to land) and it was easy. Plus megabus has free wifi.  Cheesy

My husband rented a car with Enterprise and crossed/landed in Buffalo without any issues!  The bus doesn't seem like a bad option, either.
