I got a Canadian job in London and the company looked after most of the formalities and paid my fare. It was very fast and simple.

He has already described earlier on this blog about the life style / conditions of Canada. 

As far as I know he was trying to tell that a post man makes $23 an hour and they are still on strike for hike in salary, in turn we can guess how much we can make average.

IT IS REALLY GOOD TO READ YOUR POSTS ON THIS FORUM. WE ALL FEEL ENCOURAGED AFTER READING YOUR POSTS. CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG.
I THINK THAT INDIA AND CANADA ARE BOTH FACING OPPOSITE PROBLEMS. INDIA IS FACING THE PROBLEM OF OVER-POPULATION, WHILE CANADA IS FACING THE PROBLEM OF UNDER-POPULATION. I KNOW THAT THERE ARE MANY CITIES IN CANADA THAT ARE LIKE LITERALLY EMPTY. WHEREAS THE CITY IN WHICH I LIVE ( BOMBAY ) HAS JUST BEEN AWARDED THE MOST OVER-POPULATED CITY ON THIS PLANET. YOU SIMPLY CAN'T IMAGINE HOW MASS POPULATED MUMBAI IS, OR INDIA FOR THAT MATTER. THIS IS ONE MAJOR DRIVING FORCE FOR MANY YOUNG PROFESSIONALS, WHO ARE SALIVATING AT THE GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY OF MOVING TO CANADA PERMANENTLY.
IN BOMBAY THERE IS QUEUE FOR EVERYTHING, RIGHT FROM OBTAINING A BIRTH CERTIFICATE FOR A NEW BORN, TO GETTING A FUNERAL PLACE FOR A DEAD PERSON. EVEN DEAD PEOPLE HAVE TO WAIT TO BE BURIED TO ASHES.
THE MAIN REASONS FOR YOUNG PROFESSIONALS DYING TO MIGRATE TO CANADA IS OVER-POPULATION, LACK OF SPACE-- CAN U IMAGINE 8-10 PEOPLE LIVING IN A SMALL HOME FOR THEIR WHOLE LIFE-- JUST LIKE HOW JEWS WERE CONFINED OR CRAMPED IN CONCENTRATION CAMPS AND GHETTOS, DURING WORLD WAR 2 BY HITLER.
ALSO THE FACT THAT 80% OF INDIA'S POPULATION IS BELOW 35 YEARS OF AGE, AND IF I AM NOT WRONG, CANADA HAS THE PROBLEM OF AGING WORK-FORCE AND BABY-BOOMERS, I THINK ITS HIGH TIME INDIA AND CANADA SHOULD HELP EACH OTHER OUT. ACTUALLY ITS A MATTER OF GIVE AND TAKE. CANADA IS GETTING SKILLED MANPOWER, A BOOST IN THE ECONOMY BY WELCOMING NEW IMMIGRANTS AND YOUNG PROFESSIONALS FROM INDIA ARE GETTING AMPLE SPACE, FREE MEDICALS, FREE EDUCATION, GOOD JOB OPPURTUNITIES, UNEMPLOYMENT ALLOWANCE AND OLD AGE PENSION.

Many thanks for the post. I was going to bow out as it seemed I was irrelevant and maybe not welcome.

I was in Delhi in February for a vacation. I found it exhilarating, infuriating, exciting, nearly dangerous, abuzz with life and a dizzying array of contrasts. The new airport terminal is probably in the top 5 in the world - it's amazing 10+. The overcrowding and dense traffic were awful. Here you will never have a baby shoved in your face because it's hungry.

Canada's economy is based on growth through immigration. We are the second largest county in the world with only 35m people. Most Canadians live within 100 miles of the border. Polls show that the public overall support the immigration policies and they are they same for all political parties. In the next five years assuming that our recovery continues I see the quotas being raised.

I think one of your first impressions of the city will be how open and uncrowded it is. As for empty towns, that's not really a factor, but remember if you are looking for work an empty town would not be viable anyway. Most immigrants come to Toronto and to a lesser extent Montreal and Vancouver. There are many programs and services to help them get settled. (Or as a last resort there is me LOL).

I am frankly astonished at how quickly immigrants, particularly from India and China manage to buy a suburban home, probably with 4 bedrooms, 3 baths and a garden. I have a Chinese friend who arrived with nothing, sold phone plans door to door, put himself through a computer course, got a job with IBM and in 6 years had a large, detached 4 bedroom house. Native born Canadians and most European immigrants simply don't have that drive.

You are right, we have a serious problem of an aging population and we are going to need a lot of skilled people in the coming years. The baby boomers are now retiring in record numbers. Ontario will need over 40,000 I.T. people over the next 5 years.

I believe that your civil service leaves a lot to be desired and that getting any kind of service or paperwork is slow and painful. Here the government offices are highly technical - you can do most things on line, and the staff are friendly and helpful. Bribery here is unthinkable.

You talked about overcrowding and that of course is relative. Many newcomers will share an apartment to save money on rent, but they will have 2 bedrooms, maybe 2 bathrooms and quite a lot of living space and a balcony. You can rent a decent two bedroom in Toronto for $1,000 per month which split between two is very manageable. I went for a long walk yesterday and took some pictures. There is not a soul in any of them and I live in the city and walked through a pleasant park.

The big craze in Toronto right now is condos and they are going up all over. Young professionals love the easy lifestyle and want to be near the action of restaurants, bars, theatres and other entertainment venues. We have a lot of overseas buyers also who see them as a safe investment and rent them out.

I think the proof is in the pudding - no one seems to ever go back home!

Pensions!

It's a long way off for most of you, but you may be interested in the Canada Pension Program. I will add a link but basically you pay into it while you are working or self employed and at 65 the maximum payment is $960 per month. You can take it earlier with a penalty.

At 65 you are also eligible of the Old Age Security pension which is a maximum of $526.85 per month. Amounts depend on years paid in to max of 35 years.

To enjoy a secure retirement it is important to supplement these pensions with your own private ones and a good way to do this is to invest in a Registered Retirement Savings Plan which allows you to deduct the amount paid in from your taxable income and then pay tax on the pension which will presumably be paid when you are in a lower  tax bracket, so the income grows tax free. You can take some money out of the plan for a downpayment on a house without penalty if you pay it back over 15 years.

I hope this information is helpful. With some careful planning you can have a safe and secure income for retirement.
