Hi! Me and my husband are both temporary foreign workers. We are planning to go on vacation this Oct. 2011 till the first week of Dec. 2011. Our work permit expires on Feb. 12, 2012. Do you think we will have a problem in the immigration going and coming back on vacation? Do we need to renew our Work Permit before going or we are still safe? How many months should really be your work permit is valid so you are safe to go on vacation? Your help is very much appreciated. Thanks!

Are you visa exempt?  If you are not, you need to ensure that your visas to enter Canada are still valid for your re-entry.  Otherwise, you should be fine assuming you are still working with the employer named on your WP.

What does it mean by visa exempt? We had a visa when we came here last 2009 and it expired last March 21, 2011. This was issued in Abu Dhabi.  We came here with our previous employer. Our new work permit is valid till Feb. 2012 with our new employer. Do we need to get a new visa? How? Thanks for your reply.

If you are a citizen of country that requires a Visitor's visa (TRV) to enter Canada, then you will have to apply at one of the Canadian offices in US for one. It can be done by mail (when the strike is over). The instructions for Buffalo are here: http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/buffalo/imm/visa_temp.aspx?lang=eng#REQUIREMENTSCANADA

Or by courier.  Seattle will accept and return via Fedex if you enclose a pre-paid envelope. However, it may have to be billed to a corporate account.  Check the Seattle consulate website.
