I don't know if they do the research... what I know for sure is that, if the officers discover that you lied on your application.. you won't be able to apply or visit Canada for two years from the date your visa refusal is issued.

To lie is never good. It may bring more harm than good in future. Though you might be tempted to tell lie by observing others. I have a brother who was Canadian PR at the time of my student visa application and I told the truth and I got the visa.
It always depends on case by case. Keep confidence in yourself. You never know the outcome unless you try.
