Definition
A sputum fungal smear is a laboratory test that looks for fungus in a sputum sample. Sputum is the material that comes up from air passages when you cough very deeply.

Alternative Names
KOH test; Fungal smear - sputum

How the test is performed
A sputum sample is needed. You will be asked to cough deeply and spit any material that comes up from your lung into a special container. The sample is sent to a lab. A small amount is lightly smeared onto a microscope slide and mixed with potassium hydroxide (KOH). The slide is examined under the microscope and checked for fungus parts.

How to prepare for the test
There is no special preparation.

How the test will feel
There is no discomfort.

Why the test is performed
Your doctor may order this test if you have abnormal sputum production or signs of a lung infection.

According to CIC,

Applications for permanent residence will not be accepted if that person's health:

is a danger to public health or safety; or
would cause excessive demand on health or social services in Canada.

In addition to Victor's comment , sputum smear is advised to rule out primarily Tuberculosis Lungs. It is a 3 sample test to be given on 3 different days. Cost wise one sample costs Rs 2500 in embassy specified labs, otherwise it costs Rs 50 per sample in a ordinary lab in your city. i hope it will clear the concept of Sputum Smear. May be your DMP is having some suspicion regarding your Chest X-Ray. He wants to rule out any infection mainly Tuberculosis Lungs.

Gud info on sputum tests

if the dmp finds any spots in the chest x-ray he will most probably order further investigation ie sputum test and then comes the worst part the test results takes good 8 weeks ( Shocked) to come.... so delays

any other view on how long the test reports take to come....Huh

Thanks all of you for the reply.

I already did my medical last july according to dmp all was ok.
But before i went for my medical i had cold, flu and cough but the dmp stated that i can still do the medical examination.
Today i received further medical and was asked to do sputum smears.
It should be done in three occasion the doctor told me so will start same as from tomorrow.
The test result will take eight weeks Sad

What if have a negative outcome will i be refused entry?
