OMG I went through a whole set of brand new ink cartridges filling out my application forms and evidence . I made soooooo many mistakes!

I just put a new cartridge in today. It's my step-daughter's printer and she was talking to it, soothing it's hard work as it was churning out the page after page....after page....after..... LOL

Speaking of killing trees for no reason, CRA (Canadian Revenue Agency) wanted a copy of my ENTIRE application as proof of me sponsoring hubby! They were thinking it would only be 10 pages HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Yeah right!

Thought y'all would enjoy a little laugh Tongue

Oh, good GRIEF!! Parker, how many pages are we looking at here?? I gotta keep it hidden from my step-daughter or she may hide her printer for it's own protection!!  Tongue

Haha well for mine it was about 90-100 pages, not including the photos. Only reason it was that many was because I had to include some disability stuff, plus I included letters from friends, our pastor and the like Smiley But I so wish I could see the CRA officer opening my package and being like WHAT THE HECK?! Smiley They asked for it!

I'd be so ready - I still have two complete copies (bound, with index tabs and copies of every document I submitted.)  You've almost made me envious.

But I'm the one being sponsored and I've been a tax resident of Canada for several years now.

This may have been answered already, but when sending in the Marriage Cert, do we need a "certified" copy?

It depends upon the country-specific rules.  For the US (for example) they just need a copy, it does not need to be a certified copy.  If it is not in French or English, the translation must be certified, of course.

Hi Leon,

we submitted our application May 23, 2012 and CEM got it May 25th, last night hubby got an email from the Immigration stating that's the confirmation that our application for permanent residence in Canada has been received by CIC on 2012/25/05 and just adviced us when we should contact CIC, currently on the website they said they are processing papers receieved April 17, 2012. I assumed they already opened our application because they've sent my husband an email which his email address can be found in his application form right?? We still need to expect for an AOR coming from them too right?

Thanks! That saves me money when I order our cert Monday!  Grin

SERIOUSLY??!!! What on earth was in it?? I guess I'll eventually "see" as I get closer, eh? (groans & crawls back into bed)

The dates on the website are deceptive and generally further back than they are really processing.  I suspect (but have no definitive evidence) that this is because if your application was received AFTER that date and you haven't heard you can inquire as to what's happening with it.  It's also clear that they do not process all applications in order.

It is encouraging to hear they are now processing applications within 60 days - perhaps that means the backlog from all the visa office changes earlier this year is starting to dissipate.

My application was received May10th 2012 without any reply from CIC. I have contacted my MP to see if they can find anything out. His subordinate told me it could take a year. What kind of system is that? If they do not process as they receive them how do they even know how long the processing time is?
I'm getting pissed off.

For applicants coming from the US, the usual order is that the sponsor receives approval in 3-4 months (many are approved right away, but if there are questions it takes longer.  In my case it required 3.5 months for sponsor approval, which made me happy because of our particular circumstances.)  Generally, the US visa offices do not send an acknowledgment of receipt.  Often the next thing you hear is from the visa office requesting your passport (or copies of the passport pages).

Using the open data project the numbers for Buffalo, applications for spouses indicate that 20% of applications are completed in 5 months, 50% of applications are completed in 8 months and 80% of applications are completed in 12 months (these are not identical to the values posted on the website, because I have used the "spouses" category not the "spouses and children" category).

So, that would suggest 8 months would be a very fast response time (3 months for sponsor plus 5 months for applicant) with 11 months being more typical (the 50% number).  If there are any issues, you should be prepared for something closer to 15 months.

"For applicants coming from the US,...."

My wife is Filipina. Neither of us has children or have been previously married. My frustration with this process comes from firsthand stories of other couples.
I have a friend that is a British citizen married a Canadian and was processed and granted his visa in 3.5 months. Two other couples here in Winnipeg were processed in 6 months. One received his sponsorship approval in just over 5 weeks.
Some people receive notification of receipt and some don't. Why? With communication technology so readily available how difficult is it to send out auto emails for confirmation and issue a case #?

Different visa offices have different practice.

Manila's processing times are 3 months (20%), 5 months (50%) and 8 (80%) for spouses and partners (again from the open data information for the 12 months ending March 31, 2012).  That's better than the US by a decent margin.  In fact, they are only slightly worse than London's posted times (and they are considered a fast visa office) - 3 months (20%), 4 months (50%) and 7 (80%).

So your MP was right - figure 8-11 months. Perhaps you'll be one of the lucky ones who gets it in 6 months because as you noted your case is a simple one.
