These figures are from January 2012. They are the total number of non-parental (i.e. spousal and child) sponsorship cases sitting in the queue, ordered from largest backlog to smallest.

You can definitely see the link between longer processing times and backlogs in centres such as Islamabad and Singapore. Also notice that the countries that supply the majority of our immigrants, such as India and the Philippines, run large queues at any given time simply due to the volume of files that they process.

Buffalo appears twice. I assume that's an error?

Yes, the first Buffalo is an aggregate total of Buffalo and all of the other American centres. So the first Buffalo should really read "USA."  That is pretty much out the window now anyway, since they have drastically changed how American applications are processed and closed Buffalo.

Makes sense. I was wondering if it was a US/Buffalo split since Seattle and New York are listed later.

Do the cases listed on these backlogs have anything to do with applicants needing more info or is this just a lack of employee or employee knowledge?

It would be interesting to know those that have started processing versus those waiting to get started.

Neither.  They have begun prioritising the backlog of parental/other family applications (they were working on such applications received in 2007 up until recently) to try to cut down the overall backlog in Immigration systems.  There is now a pause on the PGP so they can revamp the system and introduce more changes in 2013, so meanwhile they are trying to clear the backlog because it wouldn't be fair to have all these applications outstanding under the old system when they bring a new one into place.

Spousal/dependent processing is going to slow down/has slowed down, so it's not a question of some that have started processing while others will be waiting to be started/put on hold indefinitely.  The applications being approved now and going to the visa offices will be be processed in order as they come in, it's just that the line is longer and they are not being seen to ahead of other types of applications they would normally be prioritised over.

Well I hope that they have added more help to clear the back log or we will be for a long wait.

Are these stats only for family class applications or do these numbers include other classes like federal skilled workers etc.?

Only family class and does not include parental applications. The skilled worker category looks worse, but not for long, as they are about to toss all of the older applications in the trash.
