sponsoring mother-in-law

Hi everyone, i just want to know if i can be the sponsor for my mother-in-law since i have the higher income between me and my wife as of now, or she must be the one to sponsor and i'll be her co-signor- thanks.

No, not when sponsorship is concerned.  The wife can not make the husband responsible for sponsoring her mother without having him co-sign.  If he co-signs, he will be responsible for the mother-in-law financially, even if he might have divorced her daughter in the meantime.

Well where my partner is from, Newfoundland, I know that a brother-in-law or sister-in-law can sponsor you in the provincial nominee program but I don't know if that applies to mother-in-laws.

But I agree with everyone else, I think it would be more of the responsibility of your wife to sponsor her own mother seeing as it is Family Class sponsorship.

If she meets minimum income requirements, she put her mom down on the additional family form for her PR application, and her mom has a medical examine/criminal background done then I don't think there should be a problem. Unless she has convicted any serious crimes within the past few years or has severe medical problems.

However, I could be mistaken and I am sorry if I am. So senior members please feel free to correct me if I am wrong on anything.

ColorMePanda: Yes, provincial nominee programs in some provinces allow people to sponsor their family members but for most of them, it's not meant for aging parents, it's meant for people who will contribute to the economy.  For example, in the provinces I know of, AB, MB and SK, the cut off age for a relative being sponsored tends to be around 45.  I have not looked at the Newfoundland program before but I did just now and I see that they exclude the sponsorship of parents under it.  Some provinces do not have a family stream at all.
Also, a mother would not need to have a medical or a background check at the time the daughter applies for her PR.  The rules about having to get a medical for a non-accompanying relative at the same time refer only to dependents and spouses.  If the daughter had children who are not accompanying, they would have to have a medical when she applies for PR or she would not be able to sponsor them later.  If she decided to sponsor them later, it would be very fast.  For parents, different rules apply and it takes a long time.
