Hi Donna,

Welcome to the club!  I was in Morocco at the same time as you!  I just got married there and would be happy to help you with any questions you have.  Yes, the marriage process in Morocco is long, but think of it this way, you get to spend all that time together!  My husband and I enjoyed all of the waiting and running around since it gave us more experiences together and we got to know each other very well.  So don't fear it's not hard, there is just a lot of waiting.

The embassy website gives a list of what you need:
http://www.dfait-maeci.gc.ca/morocco/marriage-en.asp

You will need to bring with you from canada: birth certificate, passport, RCMP Police clearance from canada (obtained from the city police), a letter from your employer, proof of religion (Conversion to Islam takes 3 days in Morocco, so bring proof of christianity with you to save time) proof that you are divorced if you were previously married. I made 4 copies of everything but we made more as we went along I think we kept the photocopy shops in business. lol

The rest of the papers/photos you do there. (Letter from laywer for embassy, Capacite de mariage from embassy, Attestation de nationalite from embassy, medical from doctor in his home town, Moroccan Police clearance from rabat...)

Depending on where your boyfriend lives you may not need to travel as much as we did.  But trust me, even if you must travel alot, there is nothing better then doing it by his side. :-)

Please feel free to ask any questions.

Cindy

I just have a quick question for you I was wondering if your husband had gone to the adul to find out if there was any more papers that is needed to get married. Also my boyfriend said that we would not be married by the adul as it is only for muslim men and women and if this is correct how are we to get married if you could answer me plz it would be appreciated. He said that we would go to the embassy but they say on the site that they do not marry people at the embassy could you help me out here plz. It was so nice to find this forum with such nice people and my heart goes out to all that has united with there loved ones good luck to all. And Cindy I hope that your day comes fast as I know that waiting is the worst part.

Hi Donna,

Welcome to the board, I got married in Marrakech on June 5th this year. We were married by an Adul but as I know it they are not just religious leaders but also governmental. The Canadian Embassy does not perform or permit marriage ceremonies, they provide the documents you need,Capacité de Mariage (eligibility to marry). This certificate is ssued by the Canadian Embassy in Rabat. At the same time, the Embassy will also issue you an Attestation de Nationalité [confirmation of nationality) and that's all the dealings you have with the Canadian Embassy, the rest is the Moroccan courts and Aduls.

The paperwork process took us 10 days, go prepared, have all your documents ready and in French which helps with translation. Anything in English that needs to be translated to French or Arabic will take time and will delay the whole process. We learned patience with the Moroccan courts and spend lots of time rushing and chasing our paperwork though the system and then waiting and waiting for things to get approved, signed, stamped, forwarded, notorized......etc but it was all worth it! I am married to the best man in the world (my humble opinion). Of course we had a lot of laughs during the whole process of "hurry up and wait" and I'm sure I've been to every government office in Marrakech.

The Adul that married us gave us a "to do" list and that gave us a clear idea of what we needed, so get your boyfriend to ask for something like this from whoever will be marrying you.

Best of luck,
Raven

Hi Raven

Thank you for the welcome and for the information that I need. Do you mean that everything that we need must be in french. Can you get the forms off line in french as I don't understand a bit of french lol but I am sure that my boyfriend can help me fill them out once I get there. Like should I have the criminal check and everything that I need from this end translated into french i.e. birth certificate, passport I am sorry if these are stupid question but I have never had to do this before and just new at this and there is so much to do. And if all needs to be french where abouts do I go to get this done I live in Ontario. Could you also tell me if I need photo's of us and email messages to send with all the forms. I am sorry but I just want to get this done right so it is not sent back and delay time that we could be together. My boyfriend is in Casablanca and went there for a wonderful vacation in July and hope to go back again soon it is so hard being apart.

I hope that it goes fast for you and you will be with your husband soon
Thank you so much and best of luck to you to

Hi Donna,

The process took 12 "work" days for us but my husbands town is a small town and we spent most of our days traking down the familly judge who liked to hide from work. :)  It would be great having and administrative job in that town, no one actually stays in the office. lol

The proof of religion and the approval of the courts to marry (with copies of all docs the courts ask for) is really all the adul needs but get a list from him, ours helped us a lot with the process at the municipal level.   The courts (municipality) is where all the time takes.  Plan on 3 - 4 days in Rabat, then 5 - 8 with the municipality and then 1 or 2 with the Aduls at the end to draw up the marriage contract.

You can translate everything in Rabat.  Your Birth certificate and passport are already bilingual, and the embassy gives you everything in French.  What we did is Lawyer then Embassy monday am then translator that afternoon to drop off papers to put in arabic, then police for clearance. the next day we toured around rabat then picked up our translations in the afternoon and embassy again on the 3rd day and dropped off copies of the embassy docs and police clearance for translation to arabic, then to ministry of foreign affairs to stamp the original embassy documents then picked up translations.  I can give you the name of a hotel in Rabbat that is close to everything you need, dirt cheap, nice, and bonus, if your boyfriend sweet talks the owner you may be able to share a room.  I can also give you the address of the translator as he was cheap and fast and can also help with the process in Rabat.

The photos and emails are for when you start the sponsoring process.  You don't need proof for the marriage process.

My email is super_cindy@hotmail.com

I challenge your statement Raven, I am married to the best man in the world!      Maybe we should adjust to say best men for us. ;)  We risk starting a war in the forum.

Hi Cindy

Thank you so much for all the help and I would really appreciate anything that you could help me with. Without this forum I would feel lost. I want to start to get things in order as I would like to go back to Casablanca early next year it I can afford it you know these long distance relationships lol but it will be well worth the money just to see him again in person. If I could ask did you guys meet your husbands on the net. I think that computers are so amazing you can meet so many people around the world and who would of thought that you could even meet your future husband. And in your cases your husbands. It is so nice to hear of stories that work. And Raven I am ready to play the game hurry up and wait lol. Anyway thanks a lot have to run get to work.

Thanks so much for all your help so far. My daughter sent in the papers at the end of February. They were received in Mississauga on the 2nd of March, and she just found out that the sponsorship was approved March 23rd. I think that was very fast. The papers are in Rabat I guess now. We're hoping that everything goes smoothly over there. Keep your fingers crossed for us please. Thanks again.
