Sponsoring a wife to come to Canada

The statement is CIC docs that you can't have received social assistance
in the past to sponsor a wife ? Does that effect me sponsoring a wife ?
Do they mean if I previously or presently received SA ?
What documents do you have to provide for any time you
were on assistance ?
I see their no minimum income requirements for sponsoring a
spouse with no children... How about a single mother with a
child ? I am a widower with 2 young children...
Thank you in advance for your answers....

Hi OntarioGuy
I've just been checking the Sponsor's Guide and it says you can't sponsor if you
are
receiving social assistance (other than for a disability) so present tense only, don't worry about the past.
Referring to the instructions for determining the LICO requirements its says
"If you are sponsoring a person
other than
• your spouse, common-law or conjugal partner who has no
family members, or
• your spouse, common-law or conjugal partner who has
dependent children who have no dependent children of
their own, or
• your child who has no children of his or her own,...."
So if you are sponsoring a spouse with one dependent child who has no dependent children (ie no grandchildren of your spouse) then you don't have to meet any income requirements.
Hope that helps.
