On the last page of form IMM-5490 at the bottom, there is an interpreter declaration to be signed by the person who assists the applicant in filling out and understanding the form, my question is, can the Sponsor be the interpreter and assist the sponsored person and sign this form?
Or is this exclusively reserved for a third party who is neutral to the process? Any one with experience?

Not sure about this question, but sponsor can always be the representative of the person being sponsored.

The declaration is for the person who translates the content of IMM 5490 (Sponsored Person Questionnaire) to the Applicant into his/her native language. My question was, can the Sponsor sign this declaration himself? Or does it need to be signed by someone other than the Sponsor? |

I am the sponsor, interpreter, representative and wife :-) I signed the interpreter declaration. My husband speaks english very well but does not currently read or write it at a high level; and I believe I stated this somewhere in the application. Sponsorship was approved and I heard nothing to the contrary, so I assume there were no issues with me signing the interpreter. |

I just looked at my copy of IMM 5490 and it states:
This section must be fully completed if an interpreter assisted you in the preperation of this form.
We did not fill this out because I did not think of myself as an interpreter (even though I did help him with some of the questions) because I do not speak Arabic.
It is only an IF section and even though CIC is sending us back the app for one N/A missing they mentioned nothing about this section. So I would not worry too much about whether it was your sponsor or not or for filling it out at all if the sponsor does not fluently speak your language.

dair2dv8103100, for the N/A that you forgot, was it for a whole section (that is, a certain section of questions did not apply and you just left it blank) or was it just one little box in a section where you had already written N/A at the top of that section? It seems ridiculous to me that it would be the latter, but I would like to know if I really have to fill in every single little writing field with n/a! thanks  |

I forgot to put N/A in b even though I answered the other parts of the question.   So not a situation of putting N/A in every line of the same answer.  |

Yes, I can understand the confusion and concern. I think they are just concerned that if someone professional did the interpreting and did not explain something clearly or accurately and the answer was wrong they would have a back up for the applicant who would be innocent and not purposely misrepresenting themselves. But that is just a guess. By what mrandmrsromero says it will be perfectly fine for your sponsor to sign it. So if it makes you feel more comfortable I would go with it. |

like dair2 said, if interpreter means u just rephrase in English and explain more in depth what the questions r about, then i don't think u need to sign that part....but if the interpreter is actually translating in her mother tongue the questions and she cannot understand the English or French in the questions, then yeah u could (should?) sign it...but do more research if family members can be the interpreters or it needs to be an official one
ask urself also if in case of an interview she could understand and answer by herself those questions...if yes, then i wouldn't sign it
