LANDED..........: 2010

« on: December 18, 2010, 11:33:22 am »

What we hear and read:
1.   No Jobs in Canada
2.   Racial Profiling
3.   New Immigrants doing only labour jobs etc etc.

So, is this distress call?

Can this be called alarming situation in Canada?

Are we making mistake by coming to Canada ?

Should we get discouraged by reading all this.

I landed in Canada 5 ˝ months back, being disabled It was difficult for me to lift loads or stand all day. I tried but these sort work was not given to me. Placement agency doesn't have office jobs. When they have perfect people for these kinds of jobs why they would hire a person like me.  So, I could not earn a single $ till date and spent a lot of my savings.

After landing I stated observing the job market, requirement of employment, learning Canadian system. Thereafter I started sending my resume – in hundreds. No response. Got to know that I was doing mistake. One should post for selected job posting.  I faced 2 interviews in Banks and was not selected. Learnt from mistakes in interviews and got enough to be perfect in interviewing and got my 1st job in a bank. Needless to say I am brown man. I could not have hoped for a better job than this. I could not see any racial profiling for my job; my interview was conducted by white people only.  I don't have Canadian education or experience. I can not blame for my earlier rejection on any racial profiling, it was my mistakes which resulted in rejection.  Few things are here, like you would see most of managerial positions are occupied by white people but I feel the day would not be far when we are going reach to that positions.

I got excellent help for preparation of interviews from 2 members of this forum and moral support from many other members. Everyone here encouraged me to keep me motivated. That motivation kept me having spirit to fight.
Must also thank youtube from where I downloaded lot of interview videos / tips. Loaded with lots of interviewing skills ( self research / friends/glassdoor.com/ youtube)   I became a different man. I became too fluent and too perfect in interviewing skills. I am not genius so I devised hard way. I typed all the interviewing questions and typed their answers also. Any free time and I would be going through the same time and again. That helped me in getting a break.

So at anytime someone tells you, no jobs and racial profiling in Canada don't believe it. Look at this from another angle. Look at that you are lacking some skills and need to improve that to get job in Canada.

If someone observe thousand and thousands of jobs are posted everyday in Canada. It means jobs are here. Do not get down by seeing the unemployment graph. There is a lot of frictional unemployment (people who don't want to work and are happy taking social benefits or people who willingly leave a job to get another job).

Enough for today.  My friends- qorax, anu ,chari  are going for a party now. Catch you people some other time.

I can say “I started living in Canada.”

Cheer up, Welcome to Canada

Great Job, Explorer!  Great objective writing.  GREAT CREDIT to you in every way!!!
I don't want to hijack your thread, but I was reading somewhere yesterday about getting Canadian Experience and learning Canadian culture.  I wonder if you could use this thread for all to share the things they notice that are different.  It could be a Crash Course in Canadian Experience!  The example I read was about being offered something that you didn't want.  It would be impolite to say "No" in the home country, but in Canada it was wrong to say "Yes" if you really didn't want it.  Another example is gift giving. Some new Canadians are exceedingly generous with their thanks, bringing substantial gifts when a simple thank you or a bunch of flowers would be appropriate by Canadian standards.  It is hard to explain that fine line between feeling touched by someone's thoughtfulness, and making the recipient feel uncomfortable with the level of generosity, which in turn, makes them feel they should think of something to give back.  It is a delicate situation.  I am sure there are MANY other situations like this.
I wish you and your family the Happiest Christmas and a bright, successful New Year in Canada.

actually we would like to know some of these tips of interview .how its diffrent from any other country ?
are there any special tops we should avoid talking about during interview
thanks again

Interview's in Canada consists of behavioural and situation baisis ( STAR) questions. In some jobs even physiological test is given. This can consists upto 60-70 % of the interview time or questions.
Questions can be :
Q What you dont like in your co employee?
Q How you sort out any difference with co employee?
Q Tell me a time when your supervisor / manager criticised you and what you did ?
Q Tell me a time when you were not able to   convince a customer to buy a product or service? How you handled it.
Q How you deal with an angry customer ?
Q Where you see yourself to in next 2 or 5 years?
Q Tell me a time when you were a part of team and what you did?
Q Tell me a time when your team mate was not able to meet with his target and what you did ?
Q Tell me a time when you were not able to complete your sales target/ meet project deadlines, what you did ?
Q Tell me a time when you had conflict with your supervisor and how you handled it.
Q What weekness you are having ?
Q Give me a time when you made suggestion and it was accepted.
Q Tell me a time when you provided extraordinary service to a customer.
Q Tell me a time when you played a key role in a team to achieve a target.
Q  Tell me time when you met the need of a client you did not explain to you properly.
Q  Is multitasking essential and how you can say so.
Q  Why you think you are best candidate for this job and why we should hire you?
Q  What makes you nervous at work place ?
Q  What makes you feel that you are capable to do this job?
Q  What is your career objective?
Q  Tell me a time when you made mistake?
Q  How you draw attention to customers to your company ?
Q  Tell me you 3 weekness and three strength .
Q   Are you a leader or follower .
Q   When was the last time when you received positive/ negative feed back and how you dealt/ reacted with it ?
Q   Tell me time when you commitment for long period of time.
Q    How you manage stress?
Q    How you measure success?
Q    Tell me a time when you worked harder to achieve a success.

and the list goes on and on........

Most of time we think that we know the answer but most of time it is wrong answer. Google for correct answer, see on youtube - interview tips, interview questions etc etc  Lots and lots of material is on internet and most of it is free. I viewed those youtube interview tips for more than 200 hours . These interview tips on youtube are for North America. Hope this helps.
