Firstly hello.  New to the forum.

I am looking into moving to Canada.  Well, certainly working there at least.  I currently work in the Oil & Gas industry, and following a few meetings with customers in Canada, I would like to make the move out there and set-up on my own.

Now the problem is that the industry only employs engineers as consultants out in Canada.  Thus there is not much chance of getting an official job offer.  Although I am guaranteed to get lots of work due to my skills.  As I currently train customers, and so have have an added edge when it comes to working for previous customers.

Anyway, I would like to move out there permanently, however, I have noticed this will be nigh on impossible without a job offer.

However, if I could get in temporarily, for a year say, with the ability to work, then that would make applying for permanent residency a lot easier?  As far as I know I qualify points wise, I am 31, Degree qualified (Physics), have 4 years experience, I am from the UK so my English is native.

I could quite easily set-up my consultancy company here in the UK, and enter Canada on a simple business visa, which can be obtained from the airport, as I have done with my current employment, and this allows me entry for 6 months at a time, which is fine.  But this would subject me to UK tax legislation, where I'd rather pay taxes in Canada to help aid my application, (or does this not matter?).  Presumably this visa does in fact allow me to work constantly?  This would be fine in the short term at least, as I can get work instantly, as soon as I arrive, and I have been offered accommodation from a friend to start me off.

Basically, I am asking if this is a suitable route to take while applying for a permanent visa?  What permanent visa should I apply for?  Or is all hope lost as I cannot actually get a proper job offer.

Okay, so I had a look.  Is there anyway of telling how many places are available through the individual NOC code?

My experience is MOSTLY under NOC 8232, but I could probably almost manage to swing NOC 8222 under the main duties as I am responsible for field and workshop training, report formation, engineer recommendation, setting up tools, and supervising testing.

From what I am reading, if the visas are taken up, I am probably better off leaving it until July before applying.  Is this correct?  Or can I just apply anyway?

Also, I would like to apply on my own merits, but my wife is a registered nurse / oilfield medic, and she could probably get me in no problem.  But she doesn't want to come out with me initially.  Would this matter?  Would I be easier to just apply in her name?

What is the fastest way to apply?  I would ideally like to get out there asap.  Could I apply for permanent residency just now, but in the meantime get out on a temporary work visa?
