I'm living with my boyfriend in Canada while on a 1.5 year work visa. We're planning to get engaged sometime next year, but I wanted some people's opinions on if getting engaged before we send off our application. We're applying as common law and I'm not sure if us getting engaged will hurt our application or not since the officer may think if we can get engaged we can get married before applying. Any opinions?

How long have you been living together???  If it has not yet been a year then you will have to wait for that time point and be able to prove it with documentation for common law status...

Other than that, being engaged does not help with the PR process as Canada does not have a fiancee class....

So far we've been living together for 3 months. I know we have to wait at least a year for us to qualify as common law. And we have lots of documents stating we live together at the same address and joint accounts, etc. I'm not worried about that, but I was wondering if being engaged and applying as common law would help or hinder our application.

I have heard of cases where common laws with plans to get married applications were actually shelved until the time they got married so if you want to apply as common law, you probably should not tell them about any near future marriage plans.  That is unless you actually get married before you apply.

This is what I was afraid of happening, I'll definitely keep that in mind when I apply. Thanks Leon. Smiley
