I am currently on work permit with a positive LMO extended for 2009 and work permit extension application in process,

As long as your company has jobs for you, there should be no worries.  I suggest being proactive and alert - ask your employer and be straight forward.  If constructions starts to slow down in Alberta, you might be one of those who will be laid off.  Keep your eyes open for carpentry jobs in other provinces.  Some provinces have just started their construction boom.
