The last one was issued in Vancouver, Costa Rica before that.

I am applying for a new one next week in Bangkok, will be curious to see how they handle my request for the old one back. I went to Singapore last week and they made quite a stink that I only had two empty pages in the passport saying once they stamped me in legally I would not have the required two empty pages to be stamped out of SG and back into Thailand... so I will make the trek to have it replaced.. but this one has a ton of my exit and entry stamps for the last few years of travel with my wife so I really really want to keep it should we get called to an interview.

I just renewed my passport at the Mississauga passport office. All they did to cancel my old passport was clip the top right corner of the cover, the id page, and the page with "if lost" information. Then the stamped the last clipped page with "cancelled". Nothing was affected at all.

It doesn't take two empty pages to stamp you back to Thailand, does it?

Why do countries always want to see two empty pages? I understand that they need room to stamp you out, and back into the home country, but two pages \e more than what is necessary.

If you are never allowed to use the last two pages, in effect your passport does not have 24 usable pages; it only has 22!

Can anyone make sense of this?

The passport officer just looked at the passport, clipped the pages and then gave it back to me. I didn't have to leave anything with them. This was a renewal so as long as you're renewing it exactly the same as your previous ones it's easy. But if you're changing any info maybe it's more involved. I paid the $30 for Express Service, to make sure I got my new passport in the 2 weeks I'm here in Canada. I haven't gone to pick it up yet, but I have the little slip and the immigration officer made sure that it was an ok pick up date. If I needed it earlier I'm sure she would have accommodated me. Very easy and quick! (There were tons of people in there but for some reason I was called almost immediately... maybe if renewing the process you much quicker).

Good luck. I'm sure you won't have any problems and I would highly suggest if you're going to be in Canada just do the renewal then because it will be much easier than mailing it from a Canadian consulate and all of that stuff.

**I should add, that I did the renewal in person. Before when I did it through the mail I submitted my old passport with it.... so if you don't want to submit the old passport, make sure you go in person.**
