Does anyone know how to set up joint accounts between Canada and Japan? With international boundries and VO's wanting to see this as proof of your developing relationship,is it even possible?

You can always check HSBC Bank in Canada to set up a Premier bank account in Japan or if you are in Japan, you can go to HSBC Japan to set up a Canadian Premier bank account.

HSBC are incredibly difficult to deal with. Had me banging my head on the desk every single time. I wouldn't touch them even if desperate.

Ditto lynw ... we opened a joint account in Turkey last November.  They didn't give me a bank card.  When I enquired about it in Canada, I was told I had to return to the branch in which we opened the account.  Did that July; now still haven't received the card because 'they mailed it to Canada, but the address was wrong, so it got returned to Turkey'.  Double-checked .... the address was correct.  They won't send it out  second time though.  Have to pick it up in person.  In Turkey.  And it took MOUNTAINS of paperwork to open the account.  And I thought Immigration papers/forms were bad ...

HSBC maybe difficult to deal with and confusing, but patience will be rewarded: such as free global transfer and pre-approved credit card.

Do HSBC have a minimum balance for that sort of account?  Someone told me it was £100,000 which is why I didn't look into it any further....it would be great if I could set that up (or if I had £100,000 to do it!!!)

No.  We set ours up with the equivalent of about $5 CAD.

Are you sure? Usually with HSBC Premier, you need to maintain a balance with at least CAD100,000 or equivalent.  Otherwise, if you don't have the money to keep the balance, you can still have a account with monthly fee.
