    Thread for outland Buffalo applicants!

Has anybody "landed" at an airport? I'm in Calgary, can I go to the airport and go through that port of entry without having to drive to the border? I can't get past the automated system on the phone to talk to anyone to ask.

My sweet baby boy turns 8 months old today, I have renewed faith in the medical system here since I'm finally seeing a high risk doctor for my pregnancy tomorrow, and .... I got my PPR EMAIL TODAY!!!! It's a good day. ;D I'm the biggest mess right now, I'm not usually a crier, but damn...

I drove up my car from Missouri and entered as a visitor on a 12-month visitor record at the border. They asked me if I wanted to import my car at the time and I said no. They said it was fine as long as I had insurance in the US that covered me while I drove in Canada. Also, I was the only...

Congrats to all the new PPR's! I'm a little jealous. I'm having a bit of a whiney, hormonal pregnant woman day. I'm thinking I should just reprogram the software that CIC uses to track documentation (like an RPRF receipt) so that as soon as the bank or online gets payment confirmation it goes...

You can request a longer stay. I requested a visitor record for 12 months and was granted it. They knew about my permanent residency app in the system, they asked me questions about it. They were really helpful wanting to keep our family together (I crossed into AB with my husband and 5 week...

You can visit for as long as your visitor's visa is valid. Usually 6 months, but then you'd have to extend it if you don't have PPR yet. But, yes, you can visit and wait for PPR in Canada. Lots of us are doing that.

My son was born in the US, in Missouri. We brought him over the border at 5 weeks old by car with only a birth certificate showing he was born in Missouri. My husband was with us and had his Canadian passport, showing that my son was Canadian through him. So they don't need his passport. You...

I second this sentiment. I, too, filed in March. Almost everyone else from March has been approved it seems. But, I didn't pay the RPRF up front, so when my file was opened everything was approved then the fee requested. Now my file is on hold while the fee gets processed. I have a bring forward...

So out of curiosity - if you heard that your file has a bring forward date does that mean they won't look at the file again until that date? Our MP basically said the same thing: we have a positive assessment, the medicals were approved, the background checks were fine, etc. They were just...

Our MP called on the 14th (about a week ago) and said the office was processing RPRF's received in September. So, if you sent yours in before then you might want to check on it. If you sent it in after, then it's in the queue to get processed. We sent ours in around mid- to late September, so...

CIC accuses us of Business marriage.

$3000 a month isn't necessarily high. I don't know where your wife lives, but if my husband sent me $3000 a month to live so I didn't have to work while my visa was processing it would have just barely covered my expenses. Hoping for the best for your wife's visa!

What is the correct email address? I'd like to see if they received our RPRF yet.

Hey Maddy - I asked for and was granted a 1-year visitor record to stay in Canada for a year while my application was processing. I crossed by car over the Montana/Alberta border and the border agents were really helpful! I can't work or go to school, but at least we're together.

There's a foreign income exemption for income earned up to $92,000. Additionally, you are exempt from SS and Medicare taxes because you pay them in Canada. You need to request a certificate of coverage from the CRA to prove you are covered in Canada. Attach that to your return when you file it...

Publication 54 says that even a non-resident spouse who has never lived or worked in the US or had any status in the US can be treated as a US resident for tax purposes. If you do that, you need an ITIN. Form W-7 is used to apply for an ITIN, you send in the form along with your completed tax...

    Thread for outland Buffalo applicants!

Well, here is what I know for sure - I work in taxes (but am not confident in non-resident alient taxes) and I spoke with the IRS at length about the issue. You CAN file MARRIED FILING JOINT. According to the IRS (and I have this in writing in an email from them) a spouse who is a non-resident...
