1) yes its mandatory as long as you want to visit India later on. 2)OCI gives you unlimited travel so even if you are not staying more than 6 months...I think it's better to get it as it's hassle free every time you need to travel

Just take birth certificate and your passport to canadian highcommission and they will give a temporary passport to travel to canada And once you get your certificate, submit to get a new normal passport.

got approved on 14th Nov. applied 16 Aug ~90 days.

well, there are conflicting messages in the forums.. some say don't reschedule it as it may get delayed for a longer period while some say it is ok. I never saw a case who rescheduled their oath for travel purposes.. most people reschedule their travel. Given you are in Ontario and usually...

ah ok. surrender certificate is taking a week time. So unless you dont go to expedited canadian passport.. you should have your surrender certificate around the same time as your canadian passport..My spouse applied for her surrender certificate the same day as the oath and BLS said, they could...

how many days do you have after oath?

i would just get the e visa and go. you would get it in less than 2 days. I wouldnt take the risk of someone stopping and you trying to show him rules on the website while the flight is on hold.

No we applied for surrender on the day of oath and got it then. We travelled to india on e-visa and then applied for OCI once we came back.

Yes, you dont have to be present once you applied.

Just an update on the time line for OCI at Vancouver. We applied Jan 17 and we got the OCI card today. so roughly 4 weeks.

Hey, It looks good. One thing, If you have sometime between oath and travel ( min 2-3 weeks). Get your passport surrendered on the same day as your oath. Just to be on safe side. If you go by e-visa, they dont need to see your indian passport , so even if the surrender certificate is delayed...

Very nice. Small correction with regards to "2) Apply eVisa - 24 hours (and needs to be applied 4 days before flying, so say 1 week)". You can apply evisa any time, its just that they will give the visa starting 24-36hrs from the application date. So yes, to maximise the stay, applying 4 days...

E visa does not ask for surrender certificate.. yet. all other visas need it.
