Green Card may take 3+ yrs...how long does it take to get the work permit...is it immediate...also I'm not too hopeful of finding a job in my area of expertise too easily anywhere

I'll need the PR card in case I lose my job i.e. no more H1B visa

I was going to do that but decided against it as people advised me against it saying that I may be able to appeal and overturn the decision. How long does it take to apply from scratch and get the PR card with person with my profile.

Oh and they just turned down my travel document today so now I cannot go home for Xmas. They want me to give up my right to appeal if I apply for a visitor VISA.
