Dozens of people on this board alone have spoken of applying for LMIAs for positions where they're the incumbents. My guess is the employer misunderstood what he/she was told or the person he/she spoke to was very misinformed.

Can you elaborate a bit on this? Your employer was told he/she can't apply for an LMIA because you're already an employee? If that's what was said, it's untrue.

If you already got an LMO for your job, you most likely don't need an LMIA, as long as the same employer is offering you a permanent job now. In other words, you should be eligible for the 600 job offer points right now.

Just to be clear, postdocs are LMIA exempt for the purposes of applying for a work permit. This is intended as a facilitation measure for universities and workers. But nothing prevents the employer from applying for an LMIA, either for the worker to obtain a work permit or for PR.

CIC will check to see if you can do a mechanic's job (meaning: do you have the education, skills, experience). If not, your PR application would likely be refused. So just getting ANY job offer and LMIA won't help.

LMOs/now LMIAs are valid for six months but if you get a work permit based on an LMIA, then you generally don't need a new LMIA for Express Entry. Your work permit has to remain valid when applying for PR.
