CANADIAN IMMIGRATION NEWS
Saskatoon fastest growing city in Canada
Friday, 11 February 2011

Saskatoon and its surroundings has become the fastest growing and youngest area, according to a recent release of Statistics Canada. International immigration is considered the main reason for the growth.

Last Thursday, Statistics Canada released the latest population estimates, which shows that Saskatoon replaced Alberta's major cities to be the fastest-growing metropolitan area in Canada for the first time in decades.

The population of Saskatoon has now exceeded 265,000 people, which means a three percent increase in comparison with the previous year, and a jump of more than 30,000 people since 2005. Vancouver and Regina rank the second and the third for fastest growth.

According to Statistics Canada, the sharp increase in international immigration is the main factor that results in significant growth of Saskatoon. Saskatoon did see a flow of more than 3,300 new immigrants during the year, even higher than major Canadian cities such as Hamilton and Quebec City. This is due to the province's expedited application program.

The more surprising result of the release is about the age statistic. In the pan-Canadian trend of a rapidly aging population, the Saskatoon region is now the youngest of the metropolitan areas in the country, with the average age of 35.6. As well as high birth rates among the aboriginal population, the immigration of young families from overseas countries is seen as the key reason for that record.

The 2006 census crime data, released July 18, 2007, showed Saskatoon leading Canada in violent crime with 1,606 violent crimes per 100,000 residents annually. Saskatoon leads the country in sexual assaults as well. Using this data, a March 5, 2009 Maclean's article labelled Saskatoon Canada's "Most Dangerous City" due to its current high per capita crime rate.

However, crime statistics produced by the Saskatoon Police Service shows that crime is on the decline. Saskatoon saw a 71% drop in murders last year (a total of 2, compared to 7 in 2007). In 2008 total crimes against people fell 8.06% and total crimes against property fell by 8.22%.

There were accusations in the early 1990s that the Saskatoon police were engaging in starlight tours, where officers would arrest Aboriginal men and drive them out of the city in the dead of winter to abandon them.

I think you are talking about 2007 and 2008 which are left far behind......

Thanks

The level of crime in Saskatoon was pretty steady in 2010 when compared with 2009.

Overall, crimes against people were up only one point 3 percent year over year.  Crimes against property were down by a considerable 12 percent.

It's when you break down the individual stats that you start to see trends.

Saskatoon's 10 homicides last year was a big jump from the 6 experienced in 2009.  There were 8 attempted murders, which is a huge increase from only 3 the year before.

Kidnapping also saw a massive 68 percent jump.  There were 47 kidnapping charges laid, compared with 28 in 2009.  Those gains were offset by drops in robbery, and sexual violations.

On the property side, there was a 31 percent drop in arson charges, a 22 percent drop in auto theft, a 54 percent decline in Fraud, and a 23 percent drop in mischief and willful damage crimes.
