Return plan ticket can be expensive if TRV refused

I know that a return ticket is considered important, but given the uncertainty of getting the temporary visa, what do applicants do? 

Do they buy a refundable return ticket, and either cash it (if the visa is refused) or exchange it for a lower-cost non-refundable ticket (if the visa is granted)?

(I have been posting in the group concerned with permanent spousal visas, but I am beginning to question the wisdom of a permanent visa, since we will spend half the year in China. Why not just apply for a multi-year TRV and stay in Canada during the summers?  The process seems simpler.)

hello. why not to try just to book your flight? this way you don't need to pay money and it's ok for immigration.

Why not apply for the TRV without the Return Ticket. Anyway checklist says "Photocopy of your valid return ticket (if you have one)".

Whenever I look up a flight online, I get the details online, and the next step is to pay for it by credit card.

I did not provide them a valid return ticket the first two times when I extend my visa. I think it is more important to show them you do not intend to stay forever and write down the date you" intend " to leave.

Hi, I did not provide a return ticket when I applied for TRV either, and I got the visa. Even with my husband over there (which is said to make it almost impossible for me to get it). You just have to make them believe you're going to leave Canada and not stay there illegally.

True. I did not provide a copy of a "valid return ticket" when I applied for my visitor visa. I got my ticket when I was ready to leave for Canada.

My wife first tried to get a TRV with a return ticket and was denied.  We switched the direction of travel and I went there instead and it only cost us an extra $300. 

Second time we didn't book a flight first, not wanting to waste $300 and it was granted. 

If the money is an object don't book.

I applied with a copy of the Travel Agency Itinerary booked under my name showing exact entry and exit dates and I was approved no problem. My visa expires the day after the travel Itinerary states I will be leaving Canada - so they took the date very seriously.

I then booked my ticket once I had my visa, and I didn't risk losing any money.

we booked it through Travel Agency and showed them a print of bookings - it didn't cost us any money.
