CanAmerica - Every State seems to do it's own thing, so I'm guessing that is something exclusive to Michigan LOL, They post them in Indiana too. Or maybe it's just the local paper and what ever news they can dig up they post... We were originally going to get married locally here in Ontario. Then found out that because I was divorced from the States, I needed to have an Ontario lawyer prove that my divorce was legal. I called several local lawyers who didn't seem to know what I was talking about. So we decided to go to Niagara Falls, New York and get married near The Falls. If I remember correctly we did have to show them the divorce papers but that was it.

It seems EVERYTHING here has to be certified...I wonder if when I die I will have to go and get my death certificate certified. Sarcasm, sorry. I think I'm becoming certifiable!

Ok, so my divorce is finally done and out of the way...now it's just a matter of getting this letter done, and getting the marriage application taken care of! Will the fact that my hubby to be is still a US native cause problems when we go to get hitched? Or is that nothing to worry about when we have the letter?

If my fiance and I were to do this, would it complicate matters for us? I'm a divorced Canadian citizen. Would this complicate or application process or make things longer for us as a whole? I'm curious about this, because if it could save us $250, and not take anymore time, we'd be all for it.

My husband and I didn't have any problems. I'm the Canadian (never married). He's the American (divorced). We worked with a lawyer to get the necessary opinion (I provided our time lines on the previous page) and then applied to Thunder Bay. We had no trouble obtaining the marriage license after the Thunder Bay bit was done - and then had no trouble getting married in a church in Toronto with this paperwork. There are tons of lawyers in the Toronto area who can provide the necessary letter (we found loads via Google). The lawyer we ended up using didn't even need to see us in person because he's so familiar with the process. We just dropped on the paper work with his administrator and then picked up the letter a few days later. Easy!

Alright...Thunder Bay has had our paperwork now for one week, and the lawyer did request expedited processing since we're getting married on the 21st...
I'm kinda panicking, because without those documents, there's no wedding :\
Do you think they'd answer my questions if I call? I know Scylla that you said you had everything back to you within two weeks...

i"m curious about this as well...... is this only an Ontario thing? My fiance and I are both divorced and plan to wed in Utah later this year. Will we have to do this as well since I'm the divorced American? Thanks!

i'm from the UK and divorced so we had to do this too as we were getting married in ontario, thunder bay to be exact lol this was probably one of the most straightforard things we've had to do so far... just find a lawyer in ontario show him your divorce stuff (decree absolute in uk) he drafts a letter approving the marriage then you send it all off to thunder bay the form you fill in has the date of upcoming wedding on it they phoned us to check the date as canadians write the date backwards lol ie. month then day and we do it the RIGHT way heh the girl was lovely and said i'll do it right now for you and they sent it out the next day!
wish everything was as straightforward...

FWIW In Quebec you do not need a lawyer to certify the divorce papers.

I don't see the harm in calling. Although if a lawyer submitted on your behalf - maybe he/she will have to be the one to call? (Not sure about that.) We definitely had ours back in two weeks (including mailing time). Having said that, I was stressed out the entire time as well. So I completely understand how you're feeling right now. Based on the conversation I had with them before I mailed my paperwork, they are very very good at meeting expedite requests. So as long as your lawyer clearly requested a rush - then I'm sure you'll be fine! But again, having been there, I completely get why you're stressing out right now. I'm sure it will all work out!

Last April my husband and I married in Indiana (he a divorced American, I'm Canadian and never married before). We went to the county clerk, got the license, went and got married a couple days later, and then a few days after that we went back to the clerks office, took the forms that the pastor gave us, and they gave us certified copies of our license as well as our original certificate (I think it cost about $12 because we wanted multiple copies).
No lawyers, no paperwork, just us, the clerk and our papers. MUCH easier to marry in the States apparently.
When I called the registries office here in Alberta, (when we were first looking into where we wanted to get married), they said all I needed was a copy of his divorce certificate, his I.D. and my I.D.
This whole thread is surprising to me since it all was so simple on our end. Weird.
