MLTs a regulated profession
Medical Laboratory Technologists are a regulated health profession in Ontario. Being a regulated professional ensures a baseline of quality practice in the profession. In order to practice in Ontario, MLTs must meet strict requirements established by their regulator - the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario. At the present time, the entry to practice requirements include: graduation from an accredited Canadian MLT training program at the College level that includes significant hands on, clinical experience and passing a national certification exam. Once an MLT enters the profession they are responsible for completing an annual self assessment to ensure they maintain their competency. They are also accountable to the College if members of the public or the profession have concerns about the quality of their practice.

In Ontario there are three accredited MLT programs recognized by the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario. Each program is a challenging, three-year program, which includes one year of clinical work in a laboratory.
