I just got off welfare, and planning to get a full time job. how long do you have to be working in order to qualify to sponser my spouse?
from what i have heard from immigration officers, a person on welfare can not sponser anyone. is this true?

It's true that a person on welfare can not sponsor. The requirements can be found here:
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/sponsor/spouse-apply-who.asp#sponsoring
They don't say how long you have to have been off welfare but you can call CIC and ask.

Not quite the ideal situation but I still think you can sponsor him if you do it before he gets deported. If he gets deported might be a problem. You should look for a new-comer or immigrant centre in your area. They could definitely offer you some advice, might even have access to a free lawyer.
