I know this is going to sound like a silly question, but when they request the passport is this just part of the process for every applicant or does this mean that the process is almost complete?

My wife was processed in Sao Paulo. After she received notice for the passport things did move along
very fast. Our process, including my sponsorship deal, only took 4 months from the day I mailed to Mississauga.
So perhaps your process is moving along now and soon you will be together!
Good luck

They request the passport so they can issue put your one entry visa into it for 'landing' in Canada.
The passport request also signifies a positive outcome and yes, it means the process is almost complete as they are ready to issue the visa.

It really depends on your visa office.  Some, like Delhi and Manila, request the passport at the beginning of the process

Agree with Huron. It all depends on your visa office.
