Hi, does anyone have personal experience getting on the provincial health insurance plan from Régie de l'assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ)?

Hello,

You qualify as a citizen or a permanent resident of Canada. You obtain the coverage 3 months after you apply for it. You must prove at the time of application that you are indeed a permanent resident of the province of Quebec. You must maintain residence of quebec to keep your coverage. You cannot leave the province for more than 6 months straight, or within a year or you lose your coverage. You must present your permanent resident papers, your Quebec selection certificate, proof of Quebec residence, and I can't remember if they need your social insurance number or not.
It costs only around 10.00 for your card. It is really quite simple. You just go to the office with your papers required and it only takes about 10 or fifteen minutes to process. How long you have to wait to see a representative depends on how busy they are at the time. We only waited about 10 minutes because it was a slow day.

Good luck with all.

Yes. If you have applied outland and if you are here as a visitor, you can only get it when you have received your PR. We went the next day after landing, to get signed up and start the 3 month wait time. (If you have a work permit for more than 6 months, it is also possible to get on RAMQ.)

I understand that the RAMQ coverage is quite "basic"....no dental, for example. Can anyone tell me exactly what the coverage entails?

the RAMQ is quite comprehensive and they even have a good "medication plan" (if you dont have private plan or group plan)

RAMQ coverage
1. Hospitalisation cost
2. Outpatient services (consultation, Lab, Xray, CT, etc)
3. Maternity Care
4. Vision Care - kids only
5. Dental Care - kids only
6. Medication plan - you need to opt in.
 - there is a deductible of 25% on the medication cost Up to $65 amount/month + $8 for Pharmacy Admin Fees
(the fees might have changed now..as it was few years ago)

Quebec has the best plan for HealthCare - very low cost for average people; but the bad side, you need to contribute(% of income) to the Healthcare, while you file your tax return.

if you can have group or private plan - then you dont opt in the province plan and no need to contribute.

it depends on your income - you need to file 2 tax forms Quebec & Federal.

The Quebec one - there is a Schedule(K) for health contribution, a % of income after deduction etc...
