Hi, toronto2

Once you have the visa issued for single entry you can't change it to multiple visa, but you can re-apply for multiple visa at any time afterword.
Further details are on this thread also check FQA http://www.canadavisa.com/canadian-temporary-visitor-visa.html  http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/faq/visit/index.asp
Quote
The TRV is a document issued by a Canadian Immigration Visa Office outside Canada, showing that the holder has satisfied the requirements for admission to Canada as a visitor. Temporary Resident Visas may be for single entry or multiple entry.

Hope that helps,

HMI is right. There was a choice unto u to apply for a SE or ME TRV in the 1st place... however, once issued - it cannot be modified. Nonetheless, since u restored your status internally [inside Canada] - u get to have one move [as per my understanding] which could permit u to exit Canada, visit India & reEnter here. But, pls Xcheck with your local CPC before u take that plunge.

Have you changed a WORK PERMIT to Visitor Permit? In that case you may have to show strong evidence and reasons for coming back to Canada on a visitor permit/visa. You may also need to show enough finances to support yourself and your family.
