proof of funds u.s. cashiers check

i will be landing in two weeks. can i use a u.s. cashiers check to open and deposit money in a canadian bank?  at this point, i think my best option to transfer money from the states is using a cashiers check provided it will be accepted by a canadian bank. is anybody familiar with this issue? thanks.

Yes, that is ok, but it will take about 30 days to clear in a Canadian Bank.

so i have to notify both u.s. and canadian authorities that i am carrying 10k? btw, i am leaving from the united states.

i talked to hsbc canada and the customer service said that clearing of the check could take 30 days, but it could be as few as 6 days. i guess i have to assume that 30 days. you have any idea what would be a good bank to go to?
