What is the best way to show proof of funds for canadian student visa? Applicant's alone bank statement is enough or joint applicant-parents bank statement is appropriate? For how much time period bank statement is required for student visa?
Is it mandatory that statement should be of 6 months....?

You can actually use any as long as it shows adequate funds of $10,000CAD (living expenses0 + tuition fees for the first year or more. six month statement is safer but what the embassy asks for depends on which country you are applying from check the cic website.
