Med's Done....: 30-11-2011, x-ray delayed (pregnancy)

« on: May 13, 2011, 08:45:25 pm »

My wife is pregnant.  Due Jan 19, 2012.  I am very happy about this, but ....

She is part way through an inland permanent residence application.

A couple of problems:

1.  We did her medical back in December of 2009.  Due to some issues and choices, we did not submit her application until Nov 1st, 2010.  The application was returned due to THEIR error.  The application was resubmitted January 10th, 2011.

What is the status of her medical?  Can she still get her AIP, or will they first demand a new medical?  Obviously, we can't submit a new medical now until after she gives birth because of the X-ray requirement.

2.  She has a valid extension of status document ( extension of her visitor's status) until Nov. 3, 2011?  I submitted an open work permit application with her inland application.  So, she will be on implied status after this date.  Yes, the extension of status document was redundant, but without it, because her inland application was returned, she would have otherwise been out of status when the application was resubmitted.

(BTW, every visitor in Ontario must have this valid extension of status document to get an Ontario driver's license.  Anna and I just went through this process.)

With proof of valid status in Canada, and proof of living here for more than 90 days, will she still need to wait 90 days for medical insurance after she receives AIP?  If so, we will be cutting it awfully close!  Hope there will be no delays.

1.  They often extend medicals for inland applicants if the applicant has not left the country.  But in any event, by the time you get through first stage processing, the baby will be born or very close.  If they need a new medical, they will just wait until after she has the baby.

2.  I don't know the answer regarding OHIP.  You should call them to ask.

Thanks RJ.

It occured to me that because we have her Ontario Driver's license, this will help to prove her residence in Ontario.

So,

1.  Valid Visitor's record (IMM 1442)
2.  Driver's license
3.  AIP
4.  Apartment lease in both our names.

Is this enough to get OHIP immediatly (without the 90 day wait)?

BTW, I have called their office three times.  Each time I got a different answer.

The 3 mth waiting period starts as of the date you receive AIP. I lived in Canada 4 years before I got OHIP and I still had to wait the three months to use the card.

Hi there. I was pregnant during my visitor status and i did my x-ray during the 3rd trimester. The doctor told us only during the last trimester is posible. So, we completed the medicals before the baby was born. We didn't applied inland but they told us that everybody wait the 90 days period for the health card. We finally paid for the pregnancy and delivery.

Morena, do you remember how much did you have to pay for delivery? Was it in Ontario?
I'm just curious because I will have to pay for delivery pretty soon myself and am scared to think about it Smiley.
thanks

The very first time you apply for OHIP there is a 3 month wait. I had a work permit so waited the first 3 months then and when that expired I was on implied status while PR in process so lost my coverage but when I got AIP a month or so later I was covered straight away as I had already waited...

Thanks everybody, but you definately didn't tell me what I wanted to hear.  Now I am worried. I sure hope her pregnancy isn't complicated.  We have already made an appointment to discuss all of this with a midwife.

I am curious about one thing:  for all of you who insist that there is a three month wait, was your status in Canada explicit or implied?

I had  a 3 year open post grad work permit. My OHIP didn't come in time for the birth so I had to pay everything out of pocket. The bill was about $10,000 (I had a c-section). There was an organization that helped me out and that cut the costs down to about $5000. I tried getting them to help my friend but they refused this time. She will deliver next month and she is using a midwife and found this place downtown who are paying for her prenatal care. I forgot the name. I will find out and report back.

If you could plan on having a home birth (its becoming quite popular), a midwife would be a much cheaper option!  I think they run about $2-3K

Thank you.  Shocked
My OHIP will probably start just couple weeks after delivery...I cant believe it's not possible to move those couple weeks, what does it change right?  Huh
