PR application in process, 'Implied status' - valid after WP expires?

Tricky one here
We are currently living in BC and have a PR application in process in Buffalo NY (via PNP) - medicals just done yesterday. I fear this will not be processed before our original Work Permit expires April 15th. Do I need to apply for an WP extension in order to have 'Implied Status' or does the PR application in process suffice? Also as I work in health sector, and underwent a medical for my open spousal permit - (in OCT 2008) -  will I be able to get the extension without needing another medical? or will they just wait until Ottawa processes the PR medicals? - we have been living in Canada since April 2008 I have an open spousal permit, and obviously do not wish to have to stop working.  We also need to leave the country for 10 days at end of April, and need to have our documents in order for coming back to Canada. Any information or similar experiences anyone could share would be greatly appreciated!

As a PNP candidate, your husband needs to write (email) to BC PNP and ask for a Letter of Support to extend his work permit because PR has not yet been granted.  He then attaches this letter with an application to extend his Work Permit and sends it to Vegreville along with your application to extend your open work permit.  If you have a copy of the receipt for your PR medical, send that along with the applications and advise them you have not left Canada since the date of that medical.

Thanks for that direction -  we were hoping to do the online application, as the timeline is too tight to apply by mail to Vegreville.... can CIC not see our PR file 'in process' status without needing supporting documents from PNP.
 I assume this means we only have 'Implied Status' once an application for extension  of work permit has been submitted?

The work permit does not expire until April 15th.  How is the timeline too tight?  As long as Vegreville receives the extension application BEFORE the WP expires, then you remain on implied status and can continue working.  Send it by courier or any trackable method so you can verify the date the application was received in Vegreville.

You can still do the online application.  You have to include the Letter of Support from BC PNP as a scanned document that you can upload.

I suppose CIC could see that your PR application is in process if they looked for it.  But they won't.  One is a "permanent" application and the other is "temporary".  The information you received from BC PNP states that it is the applicant's responsibility to remain "in status" and extend their work permit if necessary.

I understand that we would have 'Implied status' by submitting an application - my problem is that we planned to leave Canada on April 25th for a week and on return would lose that Implied Status - so I would then have to stop working (assuming Vegreville had not yet processed the mailed applications.) I think the online application should be processed by that time (it says 48 days) which would allow us to travel. Others have suggested to me that we should go to the border (we are in Vancouver) with all our documents close to expiry date, and would be issued with extensions there - I'm a bit cautious of this route, as I know it is totally at the discretion of the Immigration Officer on the day! - I've kind of gone off topic here, so will post on another thread, thanks for the input....

If he has the letter of support from BC PNP, I don't see why he wouldn't be able to get the WP at the border.  However, he must be visa exempt from the US in order to flagpole like this.
