Guys, need some advise before we plan to apply for citizenship.

1. Me and my family ( my wife and 7 years old son) all recently renewed our PR which is valid until June 2022.

2. Due to family needs of taking care of old parents, we are thinking of moving to our home country for at least 1 year.

3. Now, my wife needs some English courses to sharpen her skill in English. She thinks it's quite a challenge for her to sit for Ielts. So she won't sit for at least for sometime.

4. I can apply for this immediately even with pre C6 rule as I have more than 4 years in last 5 years.

Now my question is:

Both my wife and My son are short of 4 years but more than 3 years and will be okay to apply under post C6 time. But since we are planning to move and won't come back in about a year - son will attend school there and won't be physically present to apply when time comes.

Now is it true that I feel I apply now before move and get citizenship in due course, then my son can also be also granted citizenship since I got one? Also do I apply for him with me or after I get mine then I apply for him?

Please advise.

I would encorage you to apply, if u r qualified.
It would be bad to miss out and have to qualify again in future for something that you're qualified now. It takes about 6 months right now for whole process and who knows what new laws will future govts make.

Apply and keep residency in Canada, let ur family leave, u get citizenship and then u leave. You can come and go and that way u can always keep eye on mail from CIC regarding test and oath, etc and obtain it in time. Things get tougher and tougher with time in today's world so its best to get things done right away if possible.

Your decision but if I were you, i'd apply and get it done. After that you can leave without any worry.
You can keep a roommate or 2 to share the rent for few months, cut costs and then leave permanently after u get citizenship/passport to take
care of family members back home. That way your family's PR status will never be in jeopardy cuz u will be a Canadian citizen.

Upto you to decide.....

Thanks Canvis!

I am planning to do the same. I will probably be applying sometime in July.

Now the question that I have is that, if I get it, then my son gets it automatically if he applies even though he did it complete 4 years yet? Mainly, as a minor, does his residency comes in to a question if one of his parent is Canadian?

Please advise.

You can add your son in your application. He does not need to meet residence requirement.

He meets the residency requirement to renew his PR but not 4 years to apply for citizenship. So I can just add him to my application even if he did not stay 4 years here?

yeah as long as he is in the application with you, its ok.
But note he may need to appear for oath (pretty sure he is exempted from test/interview) but may be necessary to bring him for oath.
Good Luck.

Yes minors do not require to meet residency when you apply together.

What if I get my citizenship before my children become permanent residents? I don't have custody at the moment, but will in the future. I was under the understanding that if the child has a naturalized citizen as a parent, he/she could skip the residency requirement, regardless of if they are applying with the parent or after. Basically, that once my children move here and get PR, they could apply for citizenship immediately after landing.

I too need some advice from someone regarding a minor application. If my husband apply for himself and our minor children for citizenship after C6 ( he and the children have residency, I know it is not necessary for the children, and our PR status is fine ), when he is called for test and interview, would he have to take the children's original passports and PR cards with him? If I and the children are out of the country at that time could he say that the children are away? Canvis, Dpenbill, Spyfy, or some other esteemed person please reply

In the minor application instruction guide,it was mentioned that you need to send original pr cards and landing papers to cic upon receiving them cic would send citizenship certificate which is used to apply for passport. I'm not sure incase minor is needed for anything here in canada for ex pics or some other documentation if your home country dont accept dual passports

Citizen certificate can not be used as travel document

Thanks, but in the document checklist for application for Canadian citizenship of minors, CIT0008E-2, it says photocopy of child's record of landing and photocopy of both sides of the PR card of the child. What I want to really know is ( I just want to clafiy), the parent who applies with the children when presents at the interview - would have to show the children's original PR cards right? But what if at that time the child is not in the country, the original PR card won't be available to the parent on hand. In that case can we post it later?

What happens next?
Once your application is received
Citizenship and Immigration Canada reviews your application to make sure:

  • The necessary documents are all included in order to process your application, and
  • The appropriate fee payment has been made.
When your application has been received by the Case Processing Centre we will send you:

A letter of acknowledgment confirming the reception of your application. If you provided an email address, you may receive an email acknowledgement, with a link to study guide.

The citizenship study guide (one study book per family) Note: The study guide is available in alternate formats including audio.

Decision
If CIC determines your child meets all the requirements for citizenship, you will receive:

  • If the child is under 14 years of age

    You will receive
    • A request for your child’s original Record of Landing (IMM 1000) and Permanent Resident Card.
    • Once these documents are received, the citizenship certificate as well as the updated IMM 1000 will be sent by mail.
Note: children under 14 years of age when the application is signed by the parent or guardian are not required to take the citizenship knowledge test or provide proof of language ability.
I am refering to this . Once you send original documents to them there are no original documents of children with you. You have only citizenship certificate with you. but I'm not sure still if minor is needed in other process. I would suggest keep minor until citizenship is finalized
