Police clearance - states?

I have sent away for the FBI clearance certification.  Do most people send in state clearances as well or wait and see if they are requested?  At $50 a pop for fingerprints, plus processing fees by the state, this could get pretty expensive!

I should add that I don't currently live in the US (I have lived in Canada leagally for the last 4 years)

Please read the instructions, you require state certificates from every state where you have resided for 6 months or more, since turning 18.
