I am currently working in US as a software professional on an H-1B visa for the past 3.5 years. I will be applying for Canadian PR for the Alberta province under the H1-B program pretty soon.

I do have a question about sponsoring family though. Once I get my PR, can I apply for sponsorship for my parents right away or do I have to live in Alberta for a certain period of time and then only apply for their sponsorship?

Any information will be very helpful.

If you want to sponsor them under AINP family stream, see http://www.albertacanada.com/immigration/immigrate/familystream.html you need to have been living in AB for 2 years and your parents need to both be under 45 when you apply and fulfill other requirements.

If that is not the case, you must sponsor them under the federal system see http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/sponsor/index.asp for requirements.  You don't need to have lived in Canada for a certain amount of time but you do need to show that you have enough income to support your parents financially.
