please help. work permit expiry

Hi everybody this is sandy. I am on open work permit right now and it is going to expire on september 9th 2011. I filed  my work permit extension already with LMO process(didn't get approval yet but to keep me in status my lawyer is filing for work permit extension just before september 9th).My doubt here is that whether I can apply for study permit after my work permit expiry date if i get to know it is rejected after september 9th, I mean will I be in status to apply for that.I have an admission to a community college in Ontario for fall intake I will ask them to differ it to january intake if you tell me that I can apply. Please help me.
